Can't boot windows

I need some help,

i was on my computer downloading some videos when my pc locked up,
it was sort of responsive but i coudn't do anything, tried clt alt delte, still nothing. So i restarted my computer, it booted up and started loading windows with the logo sign and it stoped, and rebooted again, i tried again, nothing. Then i tried booting in safe mode and it would show all the things being wrote to a partion then it would sit there and it would reboot again. So i put in my windows c.d. I tried repair and did chdisk, and i could never get it to run past 50% and it would stop. I tried a few more times to restart and when i tried to load windows again normally it would start with the windows sreen and it would stop blink a blue "death sreen" and then restart over, it doesn't stay up long enough for me to see either.

I wwould really like to fix it

any ideas would be greatly appreiated

have you actually tried to do a repair install from the boot cd setup utility, instead of from the recovery console? If chkdsk /r doesn't cure your problem that'd be my next step.

When i go to install it doesn't give me a repair option,thats if i'm doing it right, but it tells me that the drive is too full or damaged and that I needa format it.

When i go to install windows on my c drive for one it doesn't give me the option to do a repair install. But if i go to just install...

Looks like the hd is ok but the file structure has been corrupted. A format will delete all existing files. If you have valuable data and dont have backups, this is what I would suggest: Get a hold of a second hd, and either a UBCD4Win (www.ubcd4win.com) or Knoppix Live CD and copy these files over to the new drive or over a network to another pc. UBCD has to be created using a XP cd and exe file from their website so you will need access to another working pc, but its a really useful tool to run diagnostics, run chkdsk, install XP etc. A Knoppix Live CD can be created by downloading its iso (www.knoppix.com), its not as useful as ubcd, but it can read ntfs files, connect to an existing network and copy files. Once thats out of the way, you can to try to run chkdsk on the hd from the ubcd cd, format/install XP. Similar utilities are also available from the hd makers (Seatools/Data Lifegaurd/Maxblast).

So take it easy, examine your options and proceed in a patient manner.

i have access to another hd i just bought like a week ago, would it be better to install windows on it and then try and copy stuff over? or go the UBCD route?

There is also a tool called "BartPE" which is based off of windows which will allow you to not worry about running Linux and trying to get it to read NTFS. i'd suggest you google it and burn yourself a BartPE CD. (has saved my life a time or two) Then you could copy from one to the other.

However I think you might have it right, if you're going to install windows might as well do it on the new drive and make the "old" drive the slave. However if the file table has become corrupted/ damaged/ destroyed it's going to be REALLY spotty to get back all/ any of the files.

Sysinternals has a tool that might help you get that back: http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/ntfsdosprofessional.html (NTFSDos Pro) you might also be able to load that up on the BartPE CD and give it a run from there as well.

so BartPE saved my life


yea the indexes were screwed up and and i had to run chkdisk a couple times but it finally corrected it, and i don't think i lost a thing, so i'm very thankful
