Can't boot -- HDD works for ~20 seconds and then nothing

Intel i5-2500 | MSI H67MA-E35 | MSI N460GTX M2D1GD5/OC | HAF 912 | Windows 7-64

I built this bad boy right around when the Sandy Bridge came out, so it's been a while.. hasn't seen a ton of use this year, if that means anything.

Hey friends, when I power on my computer the HDD works for about 10-20 seconds and then everything is still.. eventually, the computer powers down and then restarts, and this happens on an endless cycle.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? I can test and troubleshoot and report back with updates, so if you have a suggestion I'd love to hear it! Thanks in advance for your time!

If the entire computer is failing to post (no display at all) it could be a failing device or the power supply going south.

Any other machines to test with? Might try unplugging anything you don't need (video card, hard drive, extra ram, external devices) and see if it will post.

I didn't notice anything swollen or blown on the mobo, safe to assume it's a PSU issue? I don't have a backup to use to check, should I go ahead and grab another?

If so, this was the PSU I had: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371034

Any suggestions on a new one? Any benefit to one with higher wattage?

Man, that Antec Green edition 430Watt is an old power supply with split 12V rails.

I would personally suggest this unit:

CORSAIR CXM series CX600M 600W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC CORSAIR CP-9020060-NA Power Supply

Much stronger than your old unit and it's even modular. It's currently only $44.99 after MIR and free shipping. 🙂

Thanks for the recs! I have to pinch some pennies together before I can do anything, but I'll be sure to update once I have a new PSU. 🙂

I ordered this one, ftr. Thanks for the post 🙂

PSU installed, still the same situation. Per recommendation I tried each stick of RAM individually, appears one of the sticks is bad. Powered through to Windows with the good stick inserted.
