I have been struggling to backup my HD to my external hard drive (connected via USB2) I did it successfully back in February but now I have forgotten the fix for the hangups during boots. I tried to boot from the floppy I made to boot in MS DOS mode but that hangs too. Anyone know how to untangle this. I'll give any details requested about what I have tried.

Try this:

Go into your bios and be sure the "boot from usb" is Disabled

I tried by eliminating OTHER BOOT DEVCES but that didn't work. Same problem. When I'm booting I get as far as the drivers for firewire and USB and the thing hangs. When I tried to use the advanced feature of running ghost interactively from DOS, it went one line further and hung but I could press ctl-alt-del and it would reboot and go to the same place. When I use the normal backup routine I have to prss the reset button to reboot. In either case I have to use option 2 to revert to a normal Windows boot and then I get a window that says the backup failed and there is a small corrupt file on the external hard drive with the name I gave for the destination file. I hope smeone knows how to break this.

Have you try booting with your bootdisk and typing the
ghreboot command?

You may also want to check the floppy for the "Ghosterr.txt"
to see if you can get any clues from it.

I tried to find those files but couldn't. I tried deleting the Ghost 2003 feature from my Norton SystemWorks files and did get rid of my existing program. I intended to reinstall from my Systemworks disk but, don't you know, I have lost the disk. Looks like I'll have to start the whole thing over if I can find another copy. I tried using the Norton restore feature from the wastebasket but Ghost didn't properly link to Win XP. Now I've got a bunch of extra files somewhere and can't even find those.:frown:

I found my disk but I have the same problems. I am now thinking that it is caused by using a file name that exceeds the 9 character limet for DOS. I am using a nsme of "Ghost Backup 5-29-06". That is how the file was named on the one backup that worked but I think that there must be a procedure to get a short DOS filename for the boot process. Otherwise my boot disk is corrupt. I'll format it and make a new one first.

:eek:I gave up and ordered Backupmycomputer only to read user reviews that said it was useless and no support at all. The reviews for Ghost 2003 are mostly favorable and say only you must read the manual. I guess I'm too dumb to find the magic key there. I'll just have to give up the idea of making backups of my hard drive since no one here seems to know the key either. I wanted to back it up so I could play with overclocking it since I have had bad crashes requiring reformatting the Hard drive before during this peocess.
