Home Planet is a program which displays an Earth map from the user's location, showing day and night regions, location of the Moon & current phase, and the position of a selected Earth satellite. It also offers a sky map, databases of the orbital elements of 5632 asteroids & principal periodic comets, and lots more. This amazing collection of space-related information is fascinating and the depth of information exceptional. There is even a cuckoo clock which sounds the hours and the half hours! Of course, you can turn off the cuckoo clock if you like. Because Home Planet covers such an enormous amount of ground (figuratively and literally) it is not easy to sum up all of the different aspects of the program in just a few words. Let it be suffice to say that there is more information on offer regarding the planets (including our own) and the Solar System in which we reside than 99.9% of people could ever use. We were pleased to see that it could be set for a user's location, which means that the sky view is from your location and not from someone else's. This is particularly important for residents of the Southern Hemisphere because most information is set for the Northern Hemisphere. The only "fact" which found questionable was that the Russian space station Mir was still listed -- maybe the author could occasionally update the database to fix these inevitable changes. Even if you have little real interest in astronomy you will still find lots in Home Planet to interest you. We can only say... get it! Access this 6.78MB download from:
