Be fair, OP, it's not a pure theocracy. It's at least equally a plutocracy.

fair point, and the plutocrats will continue using religion to bilk millions and control the masses thru infighting

The Repub leadership is exploiting the fact that religious folks are faith-centric. They are conditioned to accept the words spoken through their religious leaders as coming directly from heaven. Easy pickings for their political leaders to infiltrate the churches and inject their conservative dogma replete with lies, disinformation, racist doctrine and hellbent scare tactics.

The Repub leadership has weaponized the faith those Christian folks have in their God and have turned that weapon into a political cudgel swung against any and all that see through this scam of theirs. Makes one wonder how many racist Christians there are in that party of theirs seeing as if they've been sold the party line that includes the acceptance of the nation's racists into the fold.

Identify authoritarianism on the right : Omg all of them.
Identify authoritarianism on the left : A few cancelculturists bitches in a basement.

There are certain policies that require exerting immense control over people.
Such as the EPA, and Climate Change. Gun Control. Taxation and redistribution itself.

We are not without exercising ideas of authority.
It is just that their end goal is far more absolute and likely more terrible than ours.
HOWEVER...

The differences sort of fade into the background once violence begins. How do you stop a terrorist? You kill them. You root them out. You target those associated with them. AKA, to fight in combat... you do fascist things. You exert absolute control over and conquer your enemies. At the end of the day, the public will never see a difference unless we treat people better. But that would be a luxury we cannot afford if we devolve into civil war and are fighting for our very lives. Poverty, scarcity, sacrifices will be made.

Whatever we are today, is not likely who we will be afterwards. There will be losses.

This doesn't seem to have been a particularly effective strategy during my lifetime. It does seem good at generating more terrorists.

We're not quite there yet. Some states closer than others. This election is important--while Trump isn't religious at all, he gives the Evangelicals and theocrats what they want; Desantis is more of the real deal. Not just theocracy, but white theocracy. Maga is all about moving the clock back, ultimately maybe to 1919 or so before those pesky women had the right to vote. Without educated women voting the GOP would win every election.
