Can't access network in XP Pro

I did a clean install and everything whent fine but I cannot access the network. The network is through a switch on a router with another XP Pro system.

I ran the network setup wizard and I set up the network ID for a buisness network without a domain. I tried running with and without a password and I tried both the old @HOME workroup wich worked before and the MSHOME workgroup and I still cannot see the network. I enabled file and printer sharing and am sharing folders and a printer but I cannot even see my own computer on the network.

The second XP system was not changed but for some reason also cannot see the network or even itself on the network. Both systems have unique network names and are configured to allow anonymous network access.

Am I missing something, was there a network block of some kind with one of the recent critical updates of SP1a or something like that?

I don't know if it valid but I am using onboard nForce LAN with Nvidia address if has any effect on it.

Anybody experince any recent problems or know what can be done to fix it.

Thank You

Got it.

After enablong NetBIOS for WINS on both computers alowed network access again.

I there any way to run the network without netBios? I tough NetBIOS was a security risk? And what does NetBIOS do anyway?

Thanks
