First off, does he have File & Print sharing enabled? Is NETBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on both computers in TCP/IP advanced properties? Can you ping his machine? Perhaps he has the XP firewall, or another firewall, enabled.

thanks that helps. but one more problem. i can see his server. i click on it and it says incorrect username and password, and asks me to give the right username and password. he doesn't have any thing like that. he gets the same message when he tries to access my server too. please help.

in Win2K, Control Panel>Users and Passwords>"Advanced" Tab>"Advanced" button>Users>Double click on "Guest">Enable.

Not sure about WinXP, but it's something similar.

The guest account is a security risk, but you can also just establish an account on the machine with the shared resource with the same name/password as you logon to your machine with, and you won't get the password prompt. That's how I handle this issue. :)
