Can't access modem behind router

I just setup a little network last night with an SBC DSL modem and a D-Link router WBR-1310.

Without using the router and plugging the modem straight into my desktop I can access the modem interface at http://192.168.0.1. When I plug the modem into the router and run a line from the router to my desktop I can't access this anymore. I changed the IP address of the router to be 192.168.0.2. I can access it at http://192.168.0.2 and the modem will connect fine. I just can't get to it behind the router.

I did this successfully about a year ago with a Netgear router without any problems. Is there something I'm missing on the D-Link config?

Change both to dynamic IP.

Connect them together in your normal configuration.

In your network settings, check the gateway IP. That is the router's IP address.

Log into the router's administration panel and check the router's gateway IP address.

That is the IP address of your DSL modem. Now use that IP address in an internet explorer window to log in.

the netgear probably had a 192.168.1.1 (like the netgear router i have on the shelf beside me) ip instead of .0.1 (like the dlink i'm using now). i'm surprised they would have it at that IP. the IP of my cable modem is 192.168.100.1.

try changing the router IP to 192.168.1.1. this shouldn't affect your modem (like i said, mine is at 192.168.100.1 and it works fine). i can only access it from IE, but that is a limitation of the modem, not the IP address it's at.

my dlink router doesn't let you set it to dynamic for it's own IP. nor will any router i've used in the past that i can remember.

edit: reworded for clarity.
