Can't access LiveUpdate (Error inside). Why doesn't !@#!@#ing Symantec let me update the application without it?!

Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com...
Unable to connect to host
LiveUpdate could not connect to your Internet Service Provider. Verify your dial-up information is correct.
LiveUpdate session is complete.

There are no dial-up settings and the Internet works fine using a cable modem and outside IP address, yet LiveUpdate refuses to work.

I just got finished removing loads of spyware, incuding the particularly nasty LSP kinds and I ran LSPFIX, so it shouldn't have anything to do with those.

Now I'm left thinking that tehre is a virus on this person's computer, but I have no way to tell because I can't update the virus definitions. This is the classic chicken and egg scenario. Why didn't Symantec make an alternative when creating this LiveUpdate service?!

you used to be able to go to the site and download just the .dat file, or the engine, if it needs to be done. not sure if they still do that. if they don't, download AVG from grisoft.com. its free.

edit: and to answer your question in your signature, yes. why don't you setup outlook express with a new account. select hotmail account. download all the folders/synchronize the account. then, once its done that, you can save individual emails by simply clicking and dragging (.eml format i believe)

Have you tried running an internet based virus scanner, like trendmicro or symantec's online scanner?

I see that they do still provide downloadable virus definitions but they do not allow me to get it from the LiveUpdate domain or the aplication... Odd. There should at least be a link...

i think those are better solutions if he has a virus like the agrobot virus that doesn't let him run executables.
