Can't access files on my Snap Server after running Windows Update

Recently, I did a massive Windows Update. I normally don't run them because each time I do it breaks something, which is exactly what happened again. Anyway, after I ran the Windows Update I found that I was, and still am, unable to create, copy, or edit files on my Snap Server. I don't know exactly which Windows fix did this because I ran about 50 fixes overnight.

All the other PC's and Mac's can access the server fine. My PC is is the only one having a problem. I checked the Adaptec site and downloaded the supposed fix but I'm not sure what to do from here. I don't have a network guy I can call and I'm not proficient with networks myself. Any ideas?

The PC in question is running WinXP Pro
The Server is an Adaptec Snap Server 1100 running under OS 4.0

First of all, not patching your machine is a serious issue - 50 patches? You would have had a lot more problems than not being able to access your server if your machine was compromised.

That being said, you are not giving us much to work with - any error messages on the server (event logs of some sort) or in your windows event logs when you attempt to access the server? Any error messages that come up when you try to access the server? What adaptec patch is supposed to fix it?

I also have a SnapServer 2000 but I can do anything on mine without any problem and my machine is patched up to date. I would definately keep your machine more patched than what your doing though, 50 is a TON of patches.

Yes, it is a lot of patches. This isn't my computer or network though. It belongs to my boss who runs a small business and doesn't trust Microsoft updates. So I avoid the patches at work morseo than I do on my own pc at home.

The adpatec fix is found at: http://adaptec-tic.adaptec.com/cgi-...mRvd3Mgc2VjdXJpdHkgdXBkYXRl&p_li=&p_topview=1

I don't have logs or even know where to get them. Again, this is not my network. If you can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

The error message I get when trying to edit/copy files from or to the snap server is: "Error copying file or folder. Cannot copy xxxx file: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.". If I try to create a new folder on the Snap I get the message: "Unable to create the file 'New Folder'. Cannot create a file when that file already exists." Even though a new folder file does not already exist. Then when I refresh the screen it shows two new folders named "New Folder" and "New Folder (2)". And even though the files show up after the refresh I can't access them.

Weird. Lost. Yes I am.

First here is the link to the actual file you need .. instructions are included when you download the file

Patch

Second, the MS update that messed everything up is: KB885250 ... you may be able to just uninstall it on
the affected computer, but installing the Patch is the better way, so if others have that update installed
it will still work properly for them.

Description:

SnapOS 4.0.860 upgrade patch that resolve issues introduced by Microsoft KB885250 and issues with SMTP setting in SnapOS 4.0.084 and 4.0.085.

Also it is most irksome to try and view very long lines of typing
Try to keep it so people can read it with having to scroll way over

Not doing Windows patches on a monthly basis is a really bad idea. If there ever is a problem, it makes it REALLY hard to know which patch caused the problem.

I had a client (a doctor's office) that hadn't patched two of their Windows servers for 2 years. I was scared to death to update them. Doctor's offices hate it when you wipe out their servers.

On my personal PC, and on the Servers I manage, I do manual updates (not using Automatic Update), I like to wait a week or so after Patch Tuesday before I start patches. I'll monitor the IT consultant newsgroups, looking for any known patching problems.

Then, I'll patch my own Servers. Then, I'll patch my client's Servers (most of which are identical to my own).
