I have a Canon CanoScan LIDE 90, I've installed the ScanGear software for it and when I connect it to my computer via the usb cable, Windows XP lists it under My Computer with its correct name and all.
But when I try to scan anything, I just get an error saying that the scanning software is not installed or that the scanner is not connected (but still it sees it when I connect it.. it doesn't make any sense)

make sure that you plug the scanner directly into the computer. If still not working, I would go to device manager and remove the scanner, then scan for new hardware to add it back.

Thanks for the suggestion, but didn't work.
I looked around a bit in the device manager while there anyway, looking at each of the USB ports listed. One of them had my mouse (MX510) which apparently requires 98 mA. Another one listed CanoScan LiDE 90 as requiring 500 mA.
Everything is reported as working, but shrug, I ditched the mouse and tried every USB port on my computer. Still, no change :(

Try a powered usb hub hub from your local retailer, it seems your built in usb isnt supplying the amount of powered needed.
