CanoScan 670U cable question

My 670U came with a short USB A-B cable with those magnetic cores around each end. The manual says to use only the supplied cable otherwise the scanner might not work, but there was no mention of using extensions or hubs. Has anyone successfully used an extension or hub in addition to the provided cable? I'd like to move the scanner further from the PC.

I've got 1200 model of that scanner plugged into a usb hub. Make sure it is a powered hub though because the scanner is usb powered and requires a certain amount of power. (i think it is usb powered, i know mine is)

You must use a powered hub. You can't use a passive hub, because the scanner draws the entire 500mA that a USB root provides.

That was my suspicion, since lengthening the cable would increase resistance. You saved me a lot of time and money, thanks!
