Canon XTi kit lens or not?

Is the kit lens worth it? Or should I get the body and another lens. I currently have a 35-85mm lens from an old canon slr.

35mm might not be wide enough on the crop camera. I guess it's worth depends on your experience. I wouldn't say it sucks, as I've seen some good pictures come out of kit lenses. But some good alternatives to the kit lens are the tamrom 17-50 and sigma 18-50, both f/2.8 all the way through. But also in the ~$400 range new. Or the canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS.. that's suppose to be great. And it had better be at a grand 🙂

If anything, you can always sell it off to someone if it doesn't meet your needs.

Look around for deals ... I found the body with kit lens on sale for the same price as everywhere else had the body, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to have the kit lens even though I had a couple of others.

The kit lens is one of the best lenses you can buy for $70... aside from the f/1.8 50mm. That being said.. its a $70 lens... not bad, but nothing spectacular. I second the Tamrom 17-50 which you can get used for under $300.

Maybe I was thinking of the tamron 28-75.. which BTW except for being 28mm... is an awesome lens.

Buy the kit lens if you want to try it for a few months. It is cheap so no worries.

Do not buy it if you already plan on buying a better lens like the tamron 17-50 or the sigma 17-70. This is probably the best option. If for some reason you later on want the kitlens, it is available new and second hand.
