What do you think is the better deal:

The Nikon D-100 is a 6.1 mp digital slr
-comes with a 17-85mm lens --> for about 1300

The Canon 20d is a 8 mp digital slr
-comes with a 18-55mm lens --> for about 1600

I picked up the d70 and felt like i was handeling a very high quality peice of photography equipment. It felt very durable and there were lots of a little features i liked a lot --
ex: larger lcd screen, and just the positioning of the buttons for ease of use

I picked up the 20d and it is slightly lighter, which i like and dislike at the same time (easier to carry, feels cheaper). The lcd screen is smaller which i dont like. I've talked to friends about this and they say the canon because they have used canons and like them better...what about you?

I have the 20D, and recommend it (though their lenes are a bit iffy, even the "L" ones).

I'd go with Canon but that's just because I'm biased and grew up using them. I'm sure you know, but if you don't check out dpreview.com, lots of good digital camera reviews and very helpful forums

I use a Nikon (D1) and love the ergonomics... It just "makes more sense" to me than the Canon system, but that could be partly because I've used a Nikon for a few months now. If you don't have any really special needs (excellent flash metering, exotic macro stuff that doesn't cost "too much" - go Nikon, or full-frame imaging or stabilized ultra-telephotos - go Canon), go with whatever feels best to you, and whatever you think you're going to be most comfortable using in the field.

Iffy lenses? Lens design is just like every product: they may be high quality but they are not identical.

Lots of reports of less than sharp "L" series lenes.

All current reviews favor the 20D over the D70. I would not buy the bundled Canon lens. Buy the 20D body only and get start a good lens collection.

As for ergonomics - that's all according to what you are used to. I went from a whole bunch of Olympus digitals to the Canon D60 - then changed to the 20D, and it is way batter - especially in terms of speed. I can shoot ISO 1600 just about all the time indoors and never see any noticeable noise.

My 35mm film system is an old Nikon F2AS with a good set of lenses, but they don't fit the D70 body. It is the lens family that really should drive your decision. The best lenses are prime lenses - really good zooms are $$$$. The 18-55mm is not a good lens.In that category, the Canon EFS 17-85 is far better - constant f/2.8. But, of course, more bucks.
