Interesting, didn't expect an update on these ones yet. I like that the T3i now has an articulating LCD and a built in speedlight transmitter, but it seems like a fairly modest upgrade. Hoping Nikon updates the D5000 to similar specs soon.

Not looking for a new PowerShot? How's about a new DSLR? Canon has just rolled out a new entry-level Rebel and a new flagship Rebel this evening, with the T3 and T3i offering mild updates over their predecessors. The EOS Rebel T3 will ship at the end of March with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II zoom lens for $599.99, offering up a 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 Imaging processor, nine-point autofocus system and a 63-zone dual-layer metering system. You'll need to provide your own SD, SDHC or SDXC card, but unlike entry-level bodies of the past, this guy will capture full-motion video at 1280 x 720. There's an ISO range of 100 to 6,400, a pop-up flash and a newfangled Basic+ non-technical interface that should help beginners grow accustomed to more technical aspects of photography without the steep learning curve.

Stepping up, there's the new T3i, which boasts an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor, an ISO range of 100 to 6,400, support for SD / SDHC / SDXC cards, DIGIC 4 Imaging processor, pop-up flash, integrated Speedlite settings (to go along with a few new Speedlite flashes also introduced today) and a tilt / swivel LCD monitor. It'll ship at the start of March for $799.99 (body only), or $899.99 bundled with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II zoom lens. Hit the source links below for the devilish details, not to mention information on two new telephoto lenses (the EF 500mm F/4L IS II USM and EF 600mm F/4L IS II USM).

Canon EOS 600D vs. EOS 550D feature differences

The list below gives a more complete summary of the feature differences between the 600D and 550D:

Vari-angle display
Scene intelligent Auto Mode
'Basic+' creative controls in scene modes
'Creative Filters' can be applied to images in playback mode
Multi-aspect ratio shooting (3:2, 4:3, 16:9, 1:1, previewable in Live View)
Integrated Wireless flash controller with multi-flash support
'Video Snapshot' mode
Auto Lighting Optimizer now adjustable in 4 levels
Feature Guide
Image rating (1-5 stars)
Eye sensor for LCD display replaced by 'DISP' button
Marginally larger and heavier

I do like the added bit 'This top-down view reveals that the 600D is also a bit deeper, front-to-back than its predecessor, again due mainly to the swivel screen. This adds about 3mm to the depth of the grip, which may not sound like much but improves the handling to a surprising degree. The new top plate 'DISP' button can also be clearly seen here.'

I also noticed they upgraded their kit 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens. Wonder what's different...

The T2i is already killing the 60D, and Canon is making sure to kill off the 60D now with the T3i.

There is absolutely no incentive to get the 60D, and maybe even the 7D.

wireless flash support? nice!

stop making my 7D look less special damnit!!! :D
IMHOm wireless flash is a gimmic to push sales.

Before there were wireless flash, slave flash work just as well with out the "infrared or sound" trigger (however you can buy adapter relatively cheap to utilize infrared or sound trigger master/slave if needed be) .

Looks like I will be keeping my T2i and not upgrading to the T3i. I see no reason what so ever. I do plan on getting a nice Canon EF 50mm f1.4 and possibly a Canon EF-S 15-85mm.

actually upon a relook, I see no difference unless the IS is slightly better at achieving 4 stops.

I'm not sure if you realize this or not but this wireless flash is much more advanced than a simple slave trigger.

It was the main reasons I upgraded to my newer body, :).

DPReview said the only physical difference they noticed was the mounting dot is now painted on rather than molded, but optically (outside of the IS) its identical.

Yeah I noticed the new revision of that lens. I might pick one of these up... or the next revision of the 5D. I CAN'T DECIDE! :D

I'm still holding out to see what Nikon replaces the D5000 with (rumored to be announced sometime this month), but this is at the top of my list for now.

I'm sold everything a year or two ago, looking to jump back in. I had the D80 and loved it, had the XSi and didn't really care for it.

If Nikon released a new D5000 w/ similar specs & price I would be all over it as I just prefer the ergonomics/feel of a Nikon, but I think the T3i might be more what i'm looking for, especially with these new features.

Waiting a month won't kill me :)

some snippets i read:

"It's also got some of the filter effects from the 60D, like fake tilt-shift, fisheye and others."
"You can digital zoom in while shooting video"

awwwwwwww man!! zoom while in video mode makes a huge difference for manual focusing!

Im thinking of selling my 30D and 20D and getting something around a 60D. I'll wait for the next round of revisions. I don't really need a backup camera anymore since I don't shoot weddings ;)

Yes I do realized that the newer infrared control wireless flash is better than the old slave, but there are ways to get around the limitations.

I could be wrong but my understanding of the digital zoom is not for focusing but as a digital teleconverter. It states that you can digitally zoom video up to 10x and maintain HD resolution. That doesn't sound like a tool to help you focus to me.

err.. to say this leaves little incentive for the 7D is ridiculous. The 60D, I can understand to an extent.. not every hates the rebel ergonomics (focus system on the 60D is better too, though I'm not sure on this).

But the 7D is a totally different beast.

I could be wrong, too, but I'm hoping I'm right! I think you might be talking about the zoomed recording feature (where they take in the center portion of the lens, and crop it 7x to record it @ 640x480 - already in T2i/7D). I'd need to see more nonclementure to see if it's the old case or new case.

In the T2i (and T1i, and XSi), while in liveview, you can "zoom in" on a subject to fine-MF on an object (either video or shooting). Then, when you take the shot (or start recording), it goes back to the standard depth shot.
What I'm hoping is, that while shooting video (say 1080p 24p), it'll stay in "zoomed in" mode, so that you can MF the whole video w/o having to 2nd guess your focus!

P.S. the Sony A33/A55 can do this, and can do this in Liveview or EVF!

It sounded like to me that they will have 1920 x 1080 even when digitally zoomed in since the resolution is much smaller than the actual resolution of the sensor. But I'm well aware of the Live view zoom feature when taking pictures as I currently use that quite a bit on my 50D for critical focus work/tripod work/macro work.

edit: nope, still here -> http://a.img-dpreview.com/news/1102/canon/600d/EOS-600D-LEFT-SIDE-w-EF-S-18-135mm-IS.jpg

yeah, great feature :D here's the part that i was curious about:

... You can also reach distant subjects using new Movie Digital Zoom function, which crops the centre of the sensor from 3x to 10x while still maintaining Full HD quality – great for capturing wildlife on a safari holiday.
---
... When filming Full HD footage with the EOS 600D, Movie Digital Zoom can be used to magnify the centre of the sensor by 3-10x while maintaining Full HD quality.
