i heard about how the new kit 18-55mm IS is a pretty good starter lens, just curious to see how much of a difference the f/4.5 does on the long end of the 24-85mm vs. f/5.6 on the kit. losing that 6mm on a 1.6x from 18-24mm would definitely hurt though...

Thus, consider the 15-85mm. It has the image quality of the L-like 17-55mm. These are the two top EF-S lenses that are almost L-quality.
