As the title suggests, I am buying a digicam for a gift and would like to know if there are any other compact cameras in this price range that I should really be considering over the SD600?

I got my mom one. IT's awesome. My friends have the 630, but I laughed because they dished out a lot more to get that thing and you lose a viewfinder. 2" LCD is huge already. YOu don't need 2.5"

BTW, SD600 was a slickdeal @ Dell for $160 a month ago?

If you can get it at $160, it's a great deal. I paid $190 and felt good about it.

dell has it for ~$200 shipped after tax.

Office depot is around 180 after tax, and you need to wait for the $50 rebate, but you will also have the camera before christmas. Options are always nice though

I just bought this for my wife for Christmas. It was $212 with a 1GB SD card and camera case at Newegg. About 45 minutes after I placed my order a $10 off coupon was released too which would make it $202 out-the-door. Haven't done anything but wrap the camera yet so I can't say if it's any good, but my past Canons have been great.

the SD600 is awesome. I have the SD630 which is the same camera except with a larger LCD.

Go for it man, you won't regret it.
