Canon SD500 vs. Nikon Coolpix 7900

btw Dell is the #1 place to get cheap cameras. STACK COUPONS.

Why get these. Get the Canon Powershot S70. It's small enough for your pocket, pro enough for manual control. It's essentially a G6 minus the superior lens, and much smaller of course.

I am a happy owner of the Powershot G3 that was $599 but I bought it for $432 on Dell.

I've used the G3 and I think it takes good pics, but it's huge. I take it G6 is the same? You're saying the S70 takes pics on par with the G6, but much smaller? I will research.
 
I have the 5900 (essentially the 7900 @ 5 megapixels). Do you know exactly what is sub-par about the Nikon under low light? I can test it out for you, just let me know and I can take sample shots for you. I took nearly 200 pictures in Greece with my 5900 and they came out great. It's small enough to fit in your pocket but not as sleek as the SD500.

I believe the SD500 has a 3:2 mode (necessary for 4x6 prints) and explicit manual controls. The 7900 does not (much to my dismay). Irregardless, any person would be happy with either one of those cameras.

The S70 is a very nice camera but it is too large to be considered a pocket camera.

that's the trouble I have with most cameras...even with the G3, I don't take real good low light shots.
 
I don't know of any cameras that are great in low light. The darker it is, the longer the exposure time, the more blurriness possible. If I go out tonight or tomorrow night, i'll take a few pics.

One thing is that with the SD500 you can manually adjust the exposure or pick their quick setting whereas on the 7900 you can only select "party indoors" to adjust for low light indoor settings.
 
I'm still in between the two, but have decided to go with the canon due to the price $365.

now I have a question: when shooting in movie mode, does this camera have a time limit like the old G3's? Or can I shoot until I run out of memory? If I run out of memory, will the movie be saved or will I lose the movie?

has anyone tried this?

The G3 has a hot shoe for external flash. Its a waste not to use that for indoor low light situations.

Most point and shoot has trouble with Indoor shots because people don?t have steady hands. Since theres no hotshoe for external flash and the internal ones have sh!tty range... You have to practice taking them (even then theres no gurantee). I've taken many slow shutter pics in dark or low light with no flash (cause built in flash ruin some pics). Sometimes I had to take the shot a second time because even the littlest movement ruin the photo (if the subject moves its useless no matter how steady you are).

yup, I often find that no flash > flash for indoor, low light, or no light environments
 
A little OT : Some guy called me today at Staples for a Nikon 7900.

Me: "Please hold, I know we don't have it instore, its on the website"
Put the guy on hold before he could say anything. Of course I went to check, and it was indeed on special order, walked all the way back to the phone and he had hung up. Lesson learned : Always ask a$$hole customers before you go check on anything.
