Canon SD1000 or Nikon S500

almost identical specs
S500 is tiny bit smaller
I dont know too much detail into which has better sensor or process and what not
I'm leaning towards nikon because every neighbors and their dogs have canon something. SD1000 looks too much like box
 
I don't have either of those cameras, but the reviews I saw rated the SD1000 more highly than the S500. Personally, if all else is equal, I'd go to a store and hold each of them, look at where the controls are, etc., and see which I was more comfortable with.
