I have been a Canon fan for ages (since the S100). My last point and shoot was the SD850 IS (came out in 2007, about 2 gens back) - which was highly reviewed and the pictures backed up what all the accolades it was receiving. Unfortunately, I dropped it in sand/salt water and it's time for a replacement.

My question is what Canon models that are available currently best mimics the SD850 IS?

I borrowed a friend's Canon SD1200 IS and was not impressed. Night shots were great, but the auto mode overall produced washed out pictures like crazy. It made out faces look like Casper the ghost.

Should I get the SD780 IS or go for the 900 lines?

we've had a couple SDs before. I still use the SD400 when I need something quick & dirty and have a DSLR when I want to shoot some memorable pics. The SD400 pics are just too grainy in general. I don't know if they've fixed the flash on them now, but they were always bad in even mediocre light.

Well, since I had the Canon SD850 IS, the logical choices I wanted was the SD870 IS or SD880 IS, but Canon is not producing them anymore. Their numbering system for their models is whacky too, so it's hard to keep track of what is suppose to replace what...

WHAT is suppose to replace the SD880 is?

Canon's numbering system is all crazy. The SD940 is suppose to be the successor to the SD780 it seems.

The 960 gives a widescreen LCD
the 980 gives you 24mm wide eqiv
the 970 is a giant 3" LCD
the 990 is a MP whore.

I personally would take the sd780, it's ~$200. The SD1200 my mom has seems fine, so I'm not sure what the washed out look comes from. I'd just get that for myself except I already have a few batteries that work w/ the SD780 =)

Oh, to answer your question, I think the 980 is the closest successor to the 880.

My soon to be ex-wife loves her SD780 over the SD450 she had. Her requirement was an optical viewfinder though so it limited the selections.
