BTW, I'd like to put in a good work for Circuit City, while we're discussing digital cameras.
They had the S230 for $400. (Okay, $399.9x, but I'm going to round it up to $400, because that's the kind of dude I am.)
I found some Internet retailer whose webpage listed a price of $352.
Although Circuit City wouldn't do the "110%" thing on a price from a non-local store, they were willing to price match it, and sell me the camera for $352. Plus tax, yeah. But sales tax was less than shipping would've been from the other guy. (As an aside, I've had no problems getting price matches from them on 3 recent purchases -- a Canon S200, a Canon S230, and a Palm M500. On each occasion, the manager looked at the print-out of the webpage with the price I wanted them to match, told the salesman to match it, and that was that. Nor was there any difficulty with my 1 recent return -- the price matched Canon S200, which I returned for the S230.)
Now, $352 may not be the best price available, since I understand Dell is running or recently ran some sale on the S230. On the other hand, $352 isn't a bad price, the camera was in stock and I walked out with it 2 minutes after paying my money. I didn't have to mess with mail-in rebates or try to find discount codes, and -- best of all -- Circuit City has extended their "No Questions Asked, and No Re-stocking Fee" return period for the holiday season, so that it now runs until 31 January 2003.
It's this extended return period that convinced me, since I wouldn't be in the least surprised were some store, somewhere, in the next 11 weeks, to have the S230 on sale for some great price. In which case, I can just bring in proof of this new, lower price, and have Circuit City match it.
Anyway, just thought I'd mention this. I was quick to criticize Circuit City in the past (like, back when they charged a re-stocking fee on returns), so it's only fair that I praise them now that they seem to have improved a little.
Of course, I may just be dealing with a particularly generous or clueless store manager. There's always that, isn't there?
