please let me know which one of these would be the better value. both run about $250 without coupons and discounts. both have 2x optical. the sony is 3.2MP, while the Canon is 2.0MP (which is fine for my needs).

I do like the AA rechargable battery option of the sony.
I also like the compactflash card option of the canon.

both are relatively small which is important for me. any other similar camera model suggestions are welcome.

TIA

I've never used the Canon, but I'd suggest getting the Sony. I have the P72, and love it. Cool things like streaming MPEG(with sound) creation, and fantastic macro modes make it a camera that will get you by for a few years at least.
Throw in a 1GB Memstick once they become reasonable, and you can fit nearly an hour of high quality video on it. :)

thanks for the insight.

i assume the P72 sony has a better optical zoom and better lens for about $50-60 more?

the movie mode is quite nice. how do you like the physical size?

The only diff between the P32/52/72 is the optical zoom, I think. 1x/2x/3x in that order. I woulda been happy with the P32 even.
I think it's movie mode is the only one that actually streams, whereas many others only allow you 10 or 20 second clips. This one will go until you run out of space.
The size is perfect, it's just right for holding in one hand, and none of the stuff gets in the way. With some, you have to hold them a special way so you're not putting your thumb over the viewfinder/lens or having it slip in your hands. The Sony is just about right. It's only about 2.5" high by about 5 " wide.

Plus you have 3.2 mega instead of 2.0. If it's the same price, I'd be all over the Sony. Memsticks are nearly as cheap as CF now anyways, so that shouldn't be a worry. I know it had been for a while.

i had an s200, and yes i agree it quite a nice small camera. i am just interested in the movie mode and rechargable batteries of the sony dsc-p52.

however, i just dont to degrade the quality and footprint that i had with the canon s200.

sony memory stick is evil. canon+compact flash is better. sony gets you in the end with the high cost of their memory. btw get the 3mpix ver of the canon.
