Canon s100 Owners, how would you rate your camera?

I believe I have finally decided which Digital Camera I want to get - the s100 Canon.. the 2 megapixel should be sufficient for my needs. The only concerns I have are:

- proprietary battery, how long do these last, where to get them, how long to charge them, and how much do new ones cost?

- optical zoom - very limited, as opposed to other cameras out there?

- digital zoom - i am assuming not very good because of the distortion in the quality?

Also, how good is the s/w it comes with? How fast is the USB support? Can any owners of this camera or people that have considered this purchase let me know their reviews? Thanks in advance..

Frankly i know nothing about the camera, except that its digital, and therefore I don't like it. If you want to find out how good it really is then go to consumer reports and see if they have any reviews. I'm pretty sure that they have reviews online, if not you'll have to go to the library.

I have it, good for its size...

In low-light,
close-ups of people look kinda funny sometimes.
Like if they have freckles or blemishes... they tend to standout more than usual.

Battery lasts very long if you dont use the viewfinder the whole time.
Only takes couple hours to fully charge.
Might want to pick up an extra one.
Also, you'll need a bigger Compact Flash Card.
And I'd recommend a Compact Flash reader.

The zoom is fine for my liking. I wouldnt use digital zoom. Software like Photoshop will do a better job at that.

Best thing about the camera is its size...you can carry it with you always. No more "oh, I wish I had my camera".
Just stick it in your pocket...wont even notice its there.

Then you're missing out. I have four cameras, including a Canon EOS SLR with multiple lenses, a Nikon manual SLR, and a Yashica manual TLR, along with my Kodak DC4800 digicam. I also own a 1200 dpi scanner for scanning in prints from my film cameras. Even though a consumer digital camera's image quality usually won't equal a good film camera for bigger enlargements, they are MUCH more flexible and are quite OK for pix up to 5x7. I use my digital camera almost exclusively now - it's great taking 100 pictures for ZERO film cost and just deleting the ones you don't want. When the Canon EOS digital camera drops in price, I will buy it.

Have you guys had any problems w/ the zoom quality though? How about having an extra battery around?

When the camera is unused the battery holds a charge for a longer time
than my other rechargeable devices- I mean weeks. When I'm using a
camera I really can't account for battery life because there is so
much on-off-on action and if I forget to turn it off, then I'm hosed
anyway. Even so, battery life has not been a disappointment.

The image quality and zoom quality are not top of the line. I've seem
comparisons and the S10 is visibly better. But there is the great
advantage that the S100 is small enough to carry anywhere and
anytime. What's gained from a little better quality when you don't
have the camera with you? I don't think there will be anything
smaller and better for a while.

P.S. The picture uploading software is totally suckie and wants to do
file conversions during the upload process. Do yourself a favor and
get a USB CF reader - sometimes they are even included with a Lexar CF
purchase. It will be much faster than the Canon transfer and it won't
muck with your photos.

Adding to my last post- I bought it with an extra battery. I can't
remember when I've ever run out of power in mid-session, but I'm
happier having that extra battery. I have a 96mb CF card and haven't
filled more than 40-50mb during any one session. I do very few flash
pictures.

I have this camera and love it. The battery is included with the camera so there is no need to buy another one. It holds a charge for a long time and I use the view finder all of the time too. But I also charge the battery whenever I get a chance.

The size of it makes it perfect to always carry with you. You won't get the best pictures with this camera, but you will always be able to take a picture because the camera is small enough to fit in your pocket.

Oh get a bigger flash card and get a flash card reader.

I am a bit disappointed with the battery life, but I figure its my fault cuz I am always using the lcd screen and after each shot I goto display mode and look at it. EHEHEHE.

PS: Does anyone have a spare battery to sell for me cheap? Thanks.

iPaqA, if you use the 'ZoomBrowser EX' that should have come with your camera, it does not change the file format on upload, and does a nice job of organising and displaying your pictures. In Win9x, it seems to load automatically upon connecting your camera, but with Win2k that other (crappy) program loads instead. Just open it manually.

I have the S10, and I have to say that it is much better than I expected. If you want some sample pics, I can send you a few - the quality should be similar to what you would get with a S100. I've used both the S10 and S100 before, and I like the fact that there are more options and ways of doing things with the S10 than the S100 - but other than that, they're quite similar.

You guys recommended getting a separate USB memory card reader.. why is that? Does the built in USB support take too long or the fact you need to drain the batteries or have the AC Adapter attached?

I use the external CF reader because I already had one for other purposes and when I became confused about the upload options that the
Canon software was forcing me to choose, I just decided to do a simple CF transfer using my card reader.

Someone said that the software won't force a file-format transformation, but I'm not too clear on how to avoid it, and have other photo software for all the computer side digital handing that I want to do.

The s100 is ok..but for the price, its not too bad either. I liked it because the 2 megapixels
were good for my needs, but I'm eventualy going to get a better one. Probably the G1 with 3.3megapixels. The more the merrier.
