Canon Rebel upgrade to Digital Rebel XT/XTI

Unfortunately I don't have the exact specs on the lenses right now, but I was told that the lenses I have will work with the new camera.

However, there was also the caveat that they may not work at the same focal lengths they were designed for in the regular SLR. Can anyone explain to me why this is? Is this a big enough deal to buy all new lenses right now, or could I limp along (preferred due to $$$ issues) with the old ones.

I have an 18-70mm and a 100-300mm lense right now, both Canon.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I bought the XTI :):):)

Both lenses will work, but there will be a focal length increase of 1.6x for all your lenses compared to shooting film. So your 100-300mm will now effectively be 160-480mm.

Why does this happen?

This will eliminate some of my widest angles, which admittedly, I use a lot of the time. Are the kit lenses usually crap?

The Digital Rebel cameras do not have a full frame sensor on them, which means that your lenses will work differently. They use a smaller sensor instead, which means that all of your lenses get a 1.6X focal length multiplier.

In other words, your 18-70 lens becomes a 28-110, and your 100-300 lens becomes a 160-480. That telephoto lens is going to be able to zoom out more, but your ultra wide angle lens just became a wide angle instead. Both lenses should work just fine, though.

Like ultimatebob said, the sensor on Digital Rebels is physically smaller in size compared to film. It is like taking a picture with film and then cropping it. It's good for tele, but like you said you lose the wide end. I personally don't like kit lenses.

To get back to the level of wide that you're used to you will have to buy something like a Sigma 10-20mm, Tokina 12-24mm, or Canon 10-22mm. I think the Sigma 10-20mm is cheapest at around $400 :( There's really no other way around this.

Well, I'm going to go ahead with the new purchase, but hold off on buying any lenses at the moment. I'm also vascillating between the XT and the XTI. In reality I won't ever be blowing up any of my pictures to a huge degree, so I'm leaning towards scrapping the XTI idea to save some money short term.

Is there any major reason that I should look at the XTI vs. the XT?

The XTi gives you another 2 megapixels, which isn't a big deal unless you're trying to make poster sized prints. It also gives you a sensor cleaner, which I really wish that my Rebel XT had. I'm always getting dirt in there when I change lenses outside.

Don't forget that the extra 2 megapixels also affords you a little more cropping room, too. You don't need to print large prints to take advantage of more pixels.

I hear ya, but I can already crop the hell out of the 8 megapixel photos coming out of my Rebel XT without losing a lot of detail. I'm not sure how much an additional 2 megapixels would help.

The sensor dust issue is a much bigger hassle for me. I don't know... maybe I'm just a slob :)

What really drives me so nuts is how CHEAP the camera is now! The XT used to be a $1,000 camera with the lens, and now you can get it for $500!

Yeah, and without having to buy the lenses, I'm going to have more money for a trip I'm taking this summer :) I just found a reliable online source that has the XT for $499 CDN (I'm Canadian) and with the standard 1 year warranty. Elsewhere it is still going for around $650. This specific camera is Canon-factory refurbished, but so long as it has the whole warranty I'm going to jump

Thanks for the words of advice everyone.

Hello,

Here is a side by side comparison of the 2 cameras from one of the premier sites in photography:

dpreview.com

If you want more info about these cameras let me know and I can provide other places that could help in your decision.

It's not just the megapixels. The larger LCD is nice, but most importantly (to me) are 1) still improved ISO (I will take any improvement I can, heh) and 2) it shares the 30D's autofocus sensor. Of course, these are my priorities so I'm obviously biased.

I have an XT and i've used an XTi
the MAIN difference really is the LCD

I am 90% sure they use the same DSP, however there is a chance the XTi uses the newer DSP, if that is true then by all means get the XTi

Update: I did end up buying the Rebel XTI :) Found a pretty decent deal it ... I wasn't going to buy any stock lenses, but I found the body + 18-55 lens for the same price as I could find anywhere else for just the body, so I went ahead and did it. I'll be picking it up on Friday

Where'd you get the deal. I'm looking for a place to buy it too and would like the kit lense if possible. My smallest lense is a 30mm - 80mm x 1.6 =(.
