My friend bought one of these today comparing it against a T3i and Nikon D3200. I think the light weight, small size and touch screen sold her on it. She bought it from Best Buy for $650 but had $500 in credit/gift cards to use on it.

I know very little about DSLR and she wanted to know what I thought. Doing a little research, it gets good reviews for an entry level DSLR but it is a little pricey compared to some of the alternatives. Amazon has the Canon T5i with 18-55 EF-IS STM lens for $699.

Then I found this bundle deal for the SL1 at Adorama - http://www.adorama.com/ICASL1K1HS2.html

Curious, is the 75-300mm lens any good? Personally, thinking of jumping on this deal myself. Are Adorama rebates reputable?

That is a pretty bad price for the SL1 but I hope you enjoy it anyway. You could get a refurbished D3200 with kit lens for like $350 if you patiently wait for sales. Even brand new without much of a sale, you can easily get a new D3200 with 18-55 VR and 55-200mm VR lens for less than $500. http://www.adorama.com/INKD3200K1.html If you need range you can also find 55-300mm VR lenses for not much... I think I saw some refurbed ones for like $150 the other day.

The Canon 75-300 III isn't that good of a lens.. it's cheap for a reason. Mediocre autofocus speed, mediocre aperture max, and mediocre sharpness especially towards the long end. It's an okay lens but there's a reason why it retails for $199... it just isn't that good. ($199 is dirt cheap for a camera lens btw, in case you thought that was a lot of money for a lens. It's not.)

Adorama is very reputable but the rebate company is probably some other company contracted out. Still should be ok though.
