Wankrs, open the box and the first part of the manual says 'use your usb cable (which u just happen 2 have fu#*king lying around!) 2 connect the printer to your computer' :|

The clever young smart alec who came up with the idea should be shot in the nuts until he bleeds 2 death...no that's 2kind, i can't think of a suitable punishment

I, on occasion, have to install and network systems for a major fortune 500 company. This includes printers. You will find, sometimes, the USB cable included, but don't count on it, most of the time.

Printer manufacturers are skimping on components to save a buck or two. (more like $9 to $15 on EACH PRINTER) This represents little to the customer----> YOU This represents a HUGE savings to printer companies, who sell thousands of printers. Hence, no printer cable included.

I'm sorry to let you down, with that news. I also own a Cannon i9100 printer and the photos are AMAZING!

It`s common practice that printers don`t come with USB cables,besides USB cables are so cheap now, average price I`ve seen is like £2 ($3).

I`m using this one on my Canon printer,only £1.17

The last three printers I purchased where all USB an neither came with USB cables. This is from HP and Epson.

As a side note--- MaximumPC magazine and tested performance standard (bottome of the line) USB cable vs Gold Plated USB2.0 cable and their results found that the high dollar gold plated cables were BARELY faster and NOT WORTH THE MONEY.

Bottom line: Buy the cheapest USB cable that you can get yer' hands on.

What I don't get about this is that my canon printer didn't come with a usb cable, yet my cheapo canon scanner did. There is a strange marketing scheme out which none of the printer from anyone should come with USB cable.

I don't remember ever seeing a USB cable packed with a printer. If it happened it was a loooooong time ago. It sucks, but it's how companies keep the prices low. It's not that you don't need one, it's marketing by price.

This is sort of an unspoken agreement between the printer mfr's and the big box stores that sell a lot of their printers. Since the stores usually don't make much on the sale of a printer, they get to try to sell you a grossly (1000% at least) marked up cable. Anyone that isn't aware of this practice by now must live in a cave...
. If you shop around your hometown, you should be able to find a cable only marked up 300-400% .
. The scanners do come with cables, but they are often so short that the store gets to sell an extension... Cha ching!

It's a pain in the ass though if you're buying your printer from staples or some other b&m store. If you want to use your printer NOW, most likely you're going to have to buy one of those damned $20 usb cables if you don't have any laying around.

The printer companys made this deal with retail stores, it alows them to sell $25-$50 gold plated uber cables.

Its how retail (computer/electroincs) stores pay the bills. Markup on the main product is often very low.

Pocatello, the likely reason your Canon scanner came w/ a USB cable, at least w/ the LiDE series, is that the scanner ges its power from the USB.

In the grand conspiracy scenario, if all the printer manufacturers don't include a USB cable, then none of them "get hurt," only the consumer. Also, consider that most printer manufacturers don't even break even on printer sales. They make their money on ink. It's the Gillette razor blade theory: give away the razor, and kill 'em on blades.
