Canon Printer and Jetdirect

I am having problems trying to attach a Canon BJC6100 Printer to a HP Jetdirect 170x box via a parallel connection. Both seem to work indiviually, however when combined the printer seems to sound and look like it is receiving data, but then refuses to print. I am having trouble finding any support as the box and printer are from different manufacturers, however the information I do have seems to suggest they should work.

Does anyone know of any comptibility issues regarding these two pieces of kit. If so if anyone could provide me with a resolution it would really be appreciated.
