Hey guys,

My fiance is looking to get into photography, but she wants to start with something better than a point and shoot, but also affordable and entry level. I have looked at alot of reviews and the following seems like a very nice camera for the price:

Does anyone own this camera? Has anyone used this model before? I would really appreciate some input on it. Newegg has a pretty decent combo for it also here:

If there are better cameras in the same price range that you guys highly recommended over the one I selected, by all means please let me know! :)

Thanks!

My sister has one and the pictures she's getting are very nice. I've haven't played with it or full-res images myself though, so I can't give you first hand impressions.

Search flickr for photos taken with the camera.

I have the camera and rate it very high. I got it for long overseas trips where I did not want to be burdened with my 5D and several lenses.

I used a Nikon P80 last year in Portugal for the same reason, and it did the job, but the SX10-IS is superior. The Canon menu system is less layered and more intujitive (at least for me.)

I weill be taking the SX10 to South Africa next month and leave the heavy artillery at home.

Do you think the links I posted are good deals for the camera? Thanks very much for your input!

Since you're paying $330-400 for what is in essence still a point a shoot, why don't you just do her a favor and get a Nikon D40 kit for $409.99 at Amazon?

The SX 10 IS still uses a tiny point and shoot sensor: 1/2.3" It's still going to SUCK at anything above ISO 400. It's still unable to create a shallow depth of field due to the tiny sensor.

To put the sensor size into perspective, the SX10 IS has a sensor area of around 30 mm^2. A DSLR like the D40, on the other hand, has a sensor area of 370 mm^2. HUGE difference.

The D40 is a much more capable camera than the SX10 IS. If she really wants to get into photography, then zoom range does not really matter for learning the basic techniques. The D40 is also much better in terms of high ISO performance and being able to create depth of field effects. It's a great starter camera.

Alternatively, choose from one of many other entry level DSLRs for not much more than the price of that SX 10 IS...I don't think that a small-sensored superzoom is worth $340...nor do I think it's even close to the best starter camera for someone who really wants to get into photography.

If she really wants to get into photography, you might also consider a Nikon D40 - it will actually get her into the DSLR realm, and the Nikon lineup leaves a lot of room for upgrading in the future if she gets further into the hobby.

B&H Photo has a pretty amazing deal right now on a nice D40 setup:

D40, 18-55mm, 55-200mm VR, all for $510.

It definitely costs more than the SX10, but it's a real DSLR, not just a point and shoot with a very long lens.

I was shopping for a SuperZoom for myself recently. At first I was interested in a Canon S5IS. Then the SX10 came out. After doing more research, I opted for a Panasonic FZ28. In reality, I wanted to go DSLR, but I can't afford the lenses, accessories, etc. But the things that sold me on the FZ28 were the fast Leica lens, no-too-bulky package, 720p HD video, and the price. I can't make any comments on the camera other than features, because I haven't used it yet (Xmas present). But, look into an FZ28 if you're set on a superzoom.
