calling all canon buffs (i know there are so many of you here!):

according to manuals and stuff, i've discovered that my powershot s500 supports *.JPG and *.RAW images. when i insert the CF card into my reader, however, i only see the *.JPGs.

where is a setting that would allow me to save my pictures on my camera as RAW images? i went through all the menus and couldn't find anything :(

you can't do much photo editing (see this thread). for example, there's no dialog box that appears since i'm already attempting to edit an image processed by the camera.

what do you mean by "no dialog box?" photoshop can edit anything.. it's just a matter of end output. And personally, if you aren't doing anything professional, or trying for huge prints, I don't think it's worth dealing with.. of course, I have no idea if you're going to venture that route... heh, but just throwing it out there.

Are you just using the canon software?

no, i'm using photoshop.

i'm talking about editing it with those tungsten lighting settings, for example. i asked about it in that thread and then aphex and figured out that i don't get that dialog box because the JPGs are already processed (while RAWs are obviously not). i want to be able to do my own processing if possible.

BTW, you don't really need to use RAW unless you're deeply serious about photoediting.
You can do the same thing on Jpeg formats, only difference is that you sacrifie some color/shadow/highlight/wb information working on Jpeg formats.

If you're asking whether S500 supports Raw and that you want to use for "tungsten lighting settings", you shouldn't use Raw formats anyway as it'll just be more annoying to use for you.

maybe it will be annoying, but my goal is to learn in the process, so i am up for the challenge. :)

too bad that the S2 IS will not support it. i guess i'll have to figure out another way to play with such filters.

No, you don't really need RAW to work on those stuffs or filters.
Just go to Image-Adjustment and you can do most of stuffs there.
