The image stabilization is really great. You may notice some side-effects though, bright appearances of light (such as lightning or street lights) may replicate themselves in other areas of the video frame (have only noticed this when shooting video). I don't have experience with that specific Sony model, but my general experience with Sony digital cameras pales in contrast to a very good history with Canon digital cameras.

Fudge, I voted S2 on accident. DPReview gave the H1 a pretty good review, I'd take the H1.

i have an s2 and i am still blown away by the camea. i love it. personally i am not a fan of sony as a company so i would go with the canon based on that alone.

I'd go with Canon, mostly because every Sony item I've ever owned has stopped working prematurely and their warranty service SUCKS. Not to mention the recent rootkit b.s.

I made this decision recently. I went with the Cannon. Sony has a larger display but you can't flip it over for scratch protection. Better memory available for the Cannon. Lastly, I believe in buying a camera from a camera manufacturer, not an electronics
manufacturer that is in its infancy making cameras.

What a tard:
  • My F707 purchased in mid 1992 (Edit: Yes, that's a typo, first shot was dated: 2002:07:10 19:40:34) has 17,600 images under its belt, with nye a glitch... EVER.
CCD-V101 lasted from 1991-1998 when it got caught in the rain & fvcked up.
TRV-85 has shot at least 20 two hour tapes since 01-21-99, and played all of them back several times without a hitch... EVER!
SL-HF900 was purchased on 07-05-85 and still works PERFECTLY today!
KV13TR27 TV purchased on 06-28-93 is still working PERFECTLY!
    KV-36FS12 purchased 06-30-01 still PERFECT!
Clock radio(s) purchased in the '80's, still wakes me every day.
Discman purchased several years ago, still works fine.
Son's DSC-V1 purchased on 01-21-04 worked perfectly from day one, and still does...
You may want to share your vast experience with episodic, though...

Yeah, I guess! I opened this thread, anticipating Ornery's response. He doesn't like it when you diss Sony and don't back it up. :p

Ah well, I still say Sony sucks! I'm never buying a product from them again! Quality of most of their products is sub-par, you pay for their 'name' that was maybe once good in the 80's and early 90's, but doesn't do justice in today's world. I had a Sony F828; sold it after I was disappointed with the high noise in the pictures. Have 2 friends that once bought Sony cameras a year or two ago who sold theirs for the same reason. (high noise) We've all gone Canon since and wouldn't look back. Dad has a Sony VCR that took a dump on him 3 years ago. Psh, just look at the PSP! Should stand for Piece of Stinky Poop! :)

As they say, hook 'em while they're young and you have a friend for life!

NASA?s Mike Butler Maintains Bird?s Eye View of Shuttle External Tank
  • Together with cameras on the Shuttle's Solid Rocket Boosters, still and video cameras used by the crew in flight and enhanced cameras on the ground and on "chase planes" that fly in the Shuttle?s vicinity, the feedline camera will help NASA develop a comprehensive, second-by-second picture of each launch. The camera, a Sony XC-999 ultra-compact integrated camera module with a heavy, shatterproof quartz lens, can record 30 high-resolution frames per second. Butler is satisfied it will function smoothly -- it previously recorded breathtaking images of Shuttle Atlantis' ascent during the STS-112 flight in October 2002, the first mission in which a camera was installed on the tank.

The 707's came in around 2001...typo??? :)

mine has about 8K shots on it and is still kick' a$$....(that new DSC-R1 is looking pretty enticing though)...
my 6 year old (IIRC) DSC-50 (my first good digital camera) still works perfectly.
my trv22 miniDV camcamcorder also has not had any problems (mainly use it now to for its firewire output to feed analog video into my pc)...

only problem I have I had is with my sony u20...went out after about a year and half...:(

Found This

Sony DSC-D700: July 1998
Sony DSC-D770: June 1999
Sony DSC-F505: August 1999

Sony DSC-F707: August 2001
Sony DSC-F717: September 2002
Sony DSC-F828: August 2003
Sony DSC-R1: September 2005

I know this isn't about the two models you are looking at but here's my .02 regarding sony vs. canon.
I bought a sony dscs85 several years ago for ~800.00. I bought my wife a canon elph (can't rememebr the exact model #) for ~300. last year for christmas. The canon is lower in megapixel, price, etc. but it takes much better pictures than my sony out of the box.
My sony does have numerous manual settings/controls that I'm sure could be tweaked to produce better shots than the automatic settings. But I do not strive to be a professional photographer and would rather spend time taking pictures than adjusting 20 different things in between pictures.
If/when I buy another camera, it will be canon.
