Canon Powershot G12 Vs Canon Rebel T3

I'm planning on upgrading my digital camera today. I originally wanted something that was point and shoot size that would be allowed into concert arenas where I live that have a "no detachable lense" rule.

The older Canon PowerShot G12 fits this requirement and does really well in low-light conditions according to reviews. The downsize is the 5x optical zoom and digital zoom after that. I can buy this on ebay for $250-300 and found one at a local pawn shop for $299 yesterday.

I then discovered a deal on the Wal-Mart website for a Canon Rebel T3 with bag, memory card, and tripod for $449. Obviously, This is an SLR with detachable lenses.

Is anyone familiar with the Canon Rebel? I know I won't be able to bring it to concerts but was thinking about it for just general shooting of the family, zoo visits, etc. Am I better off waiting and investing more money down the road into a nicer model SLR or is this an awesome deal?

If you really want a Canon Rebel T3 (I know it used to be good camera) then why not buy cheap point and shoot camera for concert?

You could try taking a DSLR with a pancake and pass it off as nondetachable.
Or, maybe one of the mirror less models.

Question ... The Canon G12 has a 5x Optical Zoom. The T3 Wal-Mart Bundle comes with a EF-S 18-55mm zoom lens equivalent to a 28-90mm lens on an analog camera with 0.92' minimum focusing distance. Can someone explain how this lense compares to the zoom on the Canon G12? I've never had a SLR and only used Point & Shoots so not sure how much of a zoom this actually is?

Another bundle from Sam's Club had something like a 70-300mm lens or something like that too.

Thanks.

the 18-55(28-90mm eqv) is a ~3x zoom while the g12 is 28-140mm eqv at 5x zoom.
the aperture is smaller though, the t3 is f3.5-5.6 while the g12 f2.8 to 4.5.
the minimum focusing distance is the closest you can focus on something.

dude get a m4/3 cam...like the epl3(or the smaller epm1) it is a little bigger than the g12 but should perform better and its smaller, lighter, faster and cheaper than the t3.
