First I was thinking of going Nikon D40x but ruled it out since I prefer something smaller and would I really see a benefit over a decent compact digital camera for what I being using it for.

As an amateur photograper for many years I have been quite amazed at the technology improvements(especially in digital compacts).
My current cameras are 35mm film camera Canon EOS 100 with 75-300m APO Sigma lense(had that since 1990),Olympus C-770 digital compact camera(10x optical 4MP).

I use my Olympus compact the most (prefer digital) so was thinking something like the Canon A650 which uses AA batteries and has IS with 12 MP(6x optical) would be a good choice.
I like taking portraits, landscape shots etc as a hobby ,no money making involved.Side Note I normally stick ISO/ASA setting on lowest number and leave it on that setting so noise should not be an issue (ie 50 or 80 depending on the camera etc..)

Your thoughts/choices?

Steve's review of A650 .

Btw I use to be die hard SLR fan ,but over the years compact digitals have really grown on me.
I normally store pics on DVD and print some out.
