http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/26/canon-prepping-60d-and-550d-600d-with-articulating-displays/

Camera aficionados, looks like it's time for the pre-PMA rumor mill to start churning. Our inaugural whisper this season comes care of a forum poster at d-spot.co.il, who according to Canon Rumors' tipster has been accurate in the past (at this point we've been unable to corroborate). Here's the deal: a Canon 60D and Canon 550D / 600D (i.e. Rebel series). Both apparently feature a 15.1 megapixel APS-C sensor, articulating screens, and 720p video at 30 frames per second. The 60D, however, can also claim 1080p footage -- odd that the Rebel doesn't, since the current T1i has 1080p -- an electronic level, and a new battery and grip compared to its 50D successor. That one's apparently priced at around $1,190 and due out in May, while the other is $799 with no connection to a release date given. Make no mistake, between this and those waterproof Sony point-and-shoots, this is only the beginning.

But alas, back on topic... engadget is dropping articulating LCD's on canon DSLRs. I'm not entirely a fan, I was hoping for a K7 like body.

would be nice if the 60D went for smallness. the 7D allows canon to be a bit more consumerific with the xxD line. so the camera doesn't need to be as large, and even a smaller camera could still incorporate an articulating LCD. would be nice if samsung would sell them some oled screens.

i bet the xs replacement will be smaller to try to head off some u4/3-nx-sony u-system sales until canon figures out what else it wants to do. lose the grip and as much of the right side of the camera as possible (remember the oly E-500?) and you can minimize a lot of the camera. problem for canon is that the EOS mount has the largest diameter in the industry so there's only so much they could do. it'd probably look something like a chopped IX Lite

Well, we got the Rebel T2i / 550d with great features but no 60D. Will Canon release a 60D anytime soon, or are they afraid of it cannibalizing the 7D's sales?

hey i was right, the T2i shoved the T1i down to where the xsi was.

expectation: 1Ds4 soon (30+mp)
5D3 aug/sep (stay at 20 mp, better AF but not 7D level)
XS replacement (G? that's what replaced the original XS) aug/sep
60D in a new form factor? i'd go aug/sep on that one as well, gotta keep the 550D price up for a bit. though that really seems like too many cameras (doesn't stop sony)

What would a new form factor for the 60D would mean?
I love my 40D. While the 50D is not tempting enough for me to upgrade, I think that the addition of video to the XXD line would definitely sell me on a 60D.

there were two rumors floating, a K7 like move, tough and compact, but in a way that is actually still comfortable. go pick up a K7... I love it. The other, the addition of an articulating LCD.

I would prefer the k7 route myself. If I were buying a new DSLR today, I think I'd grab a pentax.

I don't think we'll ever see a 60D. The 7D is the new XXD camera.

We"ll see a 5DMkIII / D700 competitor sooner than later.

Agreed, those Pentax cameras are awfully tempting. I am holding off on purchasing any Canon lenses and waiting to see what the next round of Canon cameras looks like. If there is no 60D in the next 6 months or so, I will think pretty hard about jumping to Pentax.

One thing about Pentax, though, is that the value element is diminishing. Lenses have gone up in price, sometimes dramatically. There is still the "Pentax niche", namely weather sealing and unique primes.

Also, the K7, as measured by DxO labs, has more than 1 stop less dynamic range than many other DSLRs.

I'm reasonably happy with my K2000, but am hesitant to continue down the Pentax path, for both of these reasons.

The Kx has better IQ than the K7.

lens pricing has gone up across the board.

Too bad the Kx is oddly gimped. Though, I think the better IQ gains are more notable on the higher ISO end.
