I received my MP620B(blue) refurb today from the Egg. I'm at the point where I need to install the software/driver.

1. Which software is ok to install and which should I avoid?
2. I notice the instructions mention Adobe RGB. What is RGB? See below edit below...
Edit: I found out what Adobe RGB is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_RGB_color_space So now my question is do we need it?

3. Also, should I uninstall my old printer first? I won't be using it anymore.

4. I know the cartridges are chipped. If I refill them myself, what needs to be done to reset the printer?

5. Are there any other tips you can share?

To balloonshark, I fail to see what your issues are.

1. Yes you should uninstall your previous printer drivers. And then reboot.

2. And then install the appropriate to your OS set of MP620 drivers, following the instructions every step of the way. Very necessary order dependent when you are doing a USB cable install.

3. You bought a very low end Canon printer, with small cartridge capacity and worse yet, with a tricolor color cartridge instead of individual color cartridges. And to add insult to injury, you bought into the latest generation of Canon uncracked chipped cartridges. In short, you do not have a very good printer for refilling even if refilling is still doable.

4. To learn how to defeat the chips, just google the "nifty stuff forum" without the quotes, to learn how to do it. But you have to void the printer warranty, you lose ink level monitoring, and its a fairly convulted process.

5. If you had been smarter you would have bought the previous Canon generation of now cracked chips using the PGI-5&8 chips, bought a $30. chip resetter, and you would have been in the dirt cheap refilling business. You did not, and now your options are limited. But cheer up, you are in the same boat as many other inkjet printer users.

Thanks for your reply Lemon law. I was mainly trying to avoid any bloatware that may come with the printer.

This printer does have 5 individual cartridges, 2 of which are black. I do understand that it has chipped cartridges and hopefully someday there will be a solution.

Thanks for the nifty stuff forum hint. I'll have a look around and bookmark them.

That's what I was afraid of.

Would you have any idea of an older model that has the same specs as the mp620 which has the copier and scanner?

Well it looks like you are right and I was wrong, in saying the MP 620 has a tri color cartridge, it does has have 5 individual cartridge tanks and might be a candidate for refilling.

In terms of saying how long it will take to crack the chips, your guess is as good as mine.
It took five years to crack the PGI-5&8 series of chips and develop a chip resetter, and as soon as the chips were cracked, Canon came up with the newer printers based on the PGI-220&221 cartridge family.

Meanwhile there are a few single function and all in one Canon printers still availble on the new and used printer market that use the now cracked PGI-5&8 cartridges. I can real off names like the ip4200, but there a plethora of model numbers, the best way I know is to google the model number and see what cartridges they take.

But my position is and remains, in a brief moment in time, maybe 1998-2004, Canon, in a effort to gain market share, demonstrated how cheaply inkjet technology can print.

Sadly Canon has rejoined the evil rip off inkjet printer empire.

Thanks again! It's good to hear I may be able to refill. I don't print much but it would be nice to know that if I did I could do so at a lower cost. It is a shame crime that ink costs so much.

I was able to install newer drivers from the Canon site and the rest of the software from the cd. The scanner worked ok and I printed a 5X7 glossy of one of my nieces and my nephew. The picture looked fine to me and I'm happy everything is working.

I went to the Canon site and the PGI-5/CLI-8 cartridges are compatible with the printers below. I posted in case anyone else was interested.

You can refill the cartidges or you can get them pre-chipped. I do it all the time with mine, I have one of the Pixma printers, MP980.
The place I get them from is http://einktech.com/
They ship cheap and fast and the cartridges will not interfere with the ink levels. Just replace them and they work like the retail.

Thanks for the link Modelworks!

Have you tried refilling the cartridges? If so, where did you buy your ink?
