Canon LIDE scanner series

I know next to nothing about scanners.. but I'm looking to get one within the next few days to scan some photos. Just regular pictures taken with a regular film camera. I was looking at the Canon LIDE 20 and LIDE 30 models.. I know that they're supposedly really slow but they're small and they only require a USB cable for the transfers and power so it'd be pretty convienent.

The LIDE 20 is 600X1200 DPI and the LIDE 30 is 1200x2400 DPI.. does a higher DPI mean higher resolution, better image quality, or both?

Take into account, I don't need the photos to be a humongous size when I want to print them out or something.. I just want them to look good.

Also, anyone know if one of these scanners is good enough to scan a photo, take the files to wal-mart or something, and get the photos printed digitally there?

Image quality is about the same between the two models (form a review I read of the last generation models)

The only problem they have is if the item being scanned in not flat against the glass it will come out blurry, they have no depth of field.

Are these the scanners that don't have an independent power supply? I didn't want a scanner that ran only off the USB cable and think that these were the ones.

Yeah, these are the ones that run off just the USB cable.

Hmm, if I'm just scanning photos most of the time anyway, I guess the "flat" issue shouldn't be too much of a problem. $100 Canadian for the LIDE 20.. I guess it'd be a good investment then.

I've got the older N1220U model. Apart from the fact that it is a tad slow, the scans are great. As long as you plug it into the root hub (ie the USB port directly from your motherboard), there are no power problems.

Hmm, well I've got a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP mobo.. By root hub, I'm assuming you mean all the USB ports that plug directly into the mobo but not including PCI based USB boards and extra USB hubs?

That's right. PCI USB boards are OK too, but not external unpowered hubs.

LuDaCriS66, I've been running an LiDE30 since November, and I like it. It replaced a cantankerous Microtek 4800 that gave me nothing but trouble. If you get the LiDE30 spend a little time w/ the instructions, it will save you some grief. I like the images I'm getting, and that includes "3D" items such as pages from bound books. OCR also works well. I will say it's a little slower than the Microtek. Haven't had an issue w/ the power coming from USB.

I had a Canon LIDE scanner for two weeks a while ago...and then it died on me. The scans it delivered before it bit the dust were great, though. Fortunately, it died while I still had time to return it to the store.

Edit: Oops 😱 This is what I get for doing a search and not checking the date.
