Hi, Just bought a Canon lide60 scanner. I read reviews on google saying they do fine on photos and pages, not well on objects. I got the 60 model cause its faster, lide25 uses USB1.1 instead of USB2.0

My question is does your Canon lide25/35/60 scanner make quite a bit of noise? When i used it, seems louder than photocopier, still bearable but ive used another older scanner at school, and while it produced crap scans it was quieter.

Also what is the best scanner under $100 currently?

It is rather loud, I have an LIDE30 or whatever (it has USB2 anyway, my version). Can't help on your last question, though... :)

I have the 60 and yes it is kinda loud. Also, the scanned pictures are not that good. Do you know how to tune the scan quality through the software?

i find the scans are good if the page is flat, if its a bulky textbook then the lid doesnt close and the page isnt perfectly flat near binding so then scan is poor.

I was suprised default is 300dpi, when i select 800-1200dpi for scan warning message comes up saying some photo editing programs cant handle large pics over 100mb..so i guess 1200dpi is hard to use...

I guess the 60 replaced the 50. What did they change?
The 35 and 50 are USB2 also.

Anyone know how the 60 compares to an Epson?

60 replaced the 50 but they almost the same. The covers changed lol.
I think the 50 has 4 buttons, the 60 has 4 buttons as well but instead of File button has PDF button to scan to pdf quickly... not 100% sure on this as dont have 50. Same max resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi, 48 bit color depth...

has it for $69.95. It wont beat scanners $90 or above. Im in Australia, bought it for AUD$115 new, other scanners like epson 1670 or canon 500f cost AUD$200 here, too expensive eventhough they are better

I am from Australia

Where did you buy your lide60, as I have decided to get one.

I will use it (mainly) to assist profiling my printer (inl/paper combimations)

Who knows the difference in the Lide 35, 50 and 60? They all have 4 buttons that seem
to do the same thing. The compare feature on Canon's website doesn't work for me.

Froogle shows an Lide 60 for $57.98, from 'electronicsheaven', but when you click on it, it goes to Amazon (for $70+). Why?

Guess no one else knew either.

Answer from Canon tech support:
There is no difference between the CanoScan LiDE 35 and the LiDE 50.
The main difference between the LiDE 35 and LiDE 60 is the interpolated
resolution. The LiDE 35 has an interpolated resolution of 9600 DPI and
the LiDE 60 has 19200 DPI.

So the 35 I guess is a repackaged last season's 50. And 60 is a better scanner than the 50 vs. just a minor update.

Is 9600 DPI high enough for the avg. home user?

For what its worth, the two consumer reports editor choice scanners in the $100. range were the Epson 2480 and the Canon 4200F. (April/05 issue)

In general most users will be happy with any scanner but the acid test is usually in scanning negatives
and 35mm slides.----and only those needing that small film scanning feature neeed spend more. Otherwise you will seldom need more than 300dpi and won't see any output differences if you do.

But in my opinion, Canon an Epson make the best scanners for the money.

Epson makes the best photo scanner. Canon's slim scanners with LED light source are the best text scanner. It's very fast and no need to wait for warm up. Although they're noisy and sux for any serious color photos, I found my Lide 50 is awsome for scaning shop manual and anicent text ( I used to scan a 400 yr old book w/ 3000 pages).

Yours is really that loud? Canon says the 50 is the exact same thing as the 35, and one Amazon review (February 17, 2005) for the 35 has low noise, lower than the 20/30. Seems several reviews I saw for the 30 and/or 50 said it was quiet but I think a few did say it was loud. I know Amazon reviews aren't always the best to go by (but often neither are other types of reviews).

Another review (August 12, 2005) said they found the Lide with LED scans better (color quality and balance) than the CCFT scanners they'd used. And that the CCFT tubes burned out often.

Strange a review (September 19, 2004) for the 35 said The LiDE 35 has all the features of the LiDE 50 while costing less and weighing less., yet Canon says they're the same scanner.

I've just been turned off of Epson by my experience with their printers in the past. But i have read several statements praising their scan quality over the Canon. Is there a comparison somewhere?

printer and scanner are different things. The Canon is just noisy but not bad. I believe the Lide 50 is faster and higher dpi. If you want the best quailty, Epson makes some professional scanner that use xeon light source w/ starting price of $600-$800.

At least half of the Amazon reviews for the Epson 2480 are bad, and many said it was slow.
The Canon 4200F seems to have mainly good reviews. What's the difference in these series of scanners vs. the LiDE scanners? And are the former better for photos?
