does an adapter exist that will let you connect a Vivitar lens to a canon EOS digital camera? i know strange lens adapters exist but im not sure about this one. Someone asked me today and i said id look around. I don't know the exact model of the vivitar lens but i can find out tom.

vivitar made about a billion lenses to various specs and nearly every imaginable mount. we'd almost need a picture of the mount to figure out what it connects to. i have to imagine it'd be marked somewhere on the lens body what mount it is, though.

if it's for vivitar cameras, several vivitar cameras used K bayonet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_K_mount#Vivitar

If the Vivitar lens was made for an FD camera, you're out of luck. Those can't be adapted to EOS without physically changing the lens mount or using an adaptor that contains optics (loss of image quality and light).

Even if you're just looking for a full manual lens? Is the distance between the back of the lens and sensor/film different?

Yes. Here is a list of flange back distances and a page discussing this issue:

http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/manual_focus_EOS.html

For EOS the flange back distance is 44mm. If the flange back distance of the lens system in question is larger than 44mm, the lens will work with a simple mechanical adapter. If it is shorter than 44mm, the adapter will require optics in order to have infinity focus. Some people are willing to use the lenses without infinity focus, and in some cases (such as macro lenses) it is no big loss.

OP, just to reiterate what others have said, Vivitar was a third party lens manufacturer that made lenses for many different mounts. You will have to figure out what mount the Vivitar lens was made for before your question can be answered.

OK so i have the lens in question however i cannot easily tell what camera it was originally made for. Its a Vivitar Series 1 70-210 F.2.8-4 VMC Macro Focusing Zoom. That's what it says in the lens and on the bottom the only markings are Japan C/FD

that's Canon FD mount (C/FD). that lens could be a very good lens and might fetch some money from people using the new EVIL cameras. however, mounting it to a current canon just isn't going to work. canon made the register depth deeper when it moved to EOS to accommodate the AF mirror.
