Price? The XSi and 40D are already so cheap.

This fits between the XTi and the XSi at $599 with the cheap kit lens. I was quite surprised to see this, especially in mid-June. They must be gunning for some Nikon product which has yet to be released. Someday we may see a full frame camera with a current feature set...

I had a chance to chimp around with an XSi this past weekend.

I desperately want to like the camera; it has everything going for it except one critical flaw (for me): the grip.

I was expecting an improvement over the XTi grip, but it still feels woefully uncomfortable in my medium-sized hands. I know Canon has industrial spies; why can't they rip-off the grip from the D40 (which has been out for almost 18 months now)?

They're getting into the fight with Nikon (D40) and Sony (A200) at the low end. I read recently that the new Alphas are making a good showing at retail locations (anecdotal evidence) -- I'd like to see some figures to quantify that.

It does look like a nice camera and I'll bet it does well - the retail with the IS version of the kit lens is $649, and that isn't a bad lens from what I've heard. I just have a lot of 5D Mk II frustration built up.

canon's mount is bigger than nikon's. to maintain such overall small dimensions canon can't merely ape the D60 (this XS is actually 3 mm more narrow than the XSi and matches the D60). the diminutive e-520 has a 'better' grip, but then it's actually 7 mm wider than the XSi and a whole centimeter wider than the D60/XS are. maybe they shouldn't bother maintaining such small dimensions, but that's another argument. the original digital rebel certainly had a nice enough grip, but then it was 142 mm wide, or 16 mm wider than the D60/XS (and even wider than my old film rebel, in fact).

here i thought this wouldn't be announced until photokina. i can't believe canon will only have 1 SLR (5D replacement) for the most historically important photo trade show. maybe there will be the rumored 2 5D replacements (a lower spec one matching the D300's price and a higher spec one at about $3000?)

3 fps until card full sounds better than 3.5 for 53 jpegs to me. i guess we know the limits of the digic 3 now. i'm kinda surprised it uses a different finder than both the XTi and the XSi. looks like they got rid of the sensor below the viewfinder that turns off the screen.

yeah, could be a 3D... or maybe 7D... depending. Maybe announce they improved on the cheap IS even more and everything is getting it... the really good IS will be reserved for telephoto..? heh

Maybe a shift in pricing too... *crosses fingers till pigs fly*

the cheap IS is 4 stop anyway and if they revamp their lens line significantly i'll eat my hat.

I like the looks of the new 430 EX II...taking the locking mechanism from the 580 EX II, and much more control! I was playing around the the XSi over the weekend at a Canon demo event. Extremely light, larger lcd screen, and the buttons moved around (did they really drop the "jump" button?).

OTOH, the 1DMkIII with the EF 85 mm f/1.2 is an amazing combo!

Yep, they're gunning for the D40 and A200. Looks to be a good starter camera, kinda like the Canon version of the D50.
I still am not a fan of the D40 as a starter camera, due to the lack of the in-camera autofocus motor. It would have been an amazing boon for Nikon if they enabled full backwards compatibility with all the AF Nikkor lenses.

I assume they did research and development on the grip. Many say they prefer it to the D40 grip. Go figure... As for me, in such a small camera, I don't think it matters much. The correct way to shoot involves supporting the lens with the left hand anyway.

The 1000D is kind of funny. It's like the bastard child of the 400D, 450D, and 350D.

Nothing new. Original 430 already had that.

As you know, 5D is a FF budget camera whereas D300 is aDX flagship camera. They are not in the market to compete with each other even though end-users often compare them due to the price being similar.
Nikon is coming out with a new FF camera(a.k.a D10) that'll compete with the next version of 5D.

true, but it's just still so uncomfortable to hold.. it feels like the grip was an afterthought.

heh, it was more along the lines of wishful thinking :) I'm still vying for a couple more lenses using the cheap IS. maybe a 30-35mm prime with it.. to compete w/ the 30mm sigma, as not all of us can afford a 35L. Keep it FF too.. but that's stretching my dream way too far, haha

don't be. the tiny viewfinder is a pain. and you have spot metering.. I wish I had that on my 20D sometimes.

although, why didn't you go for a 40D given it's rebates?

It doesn't work with the RC-1 or RC-5 wireless remotes. Strange.

cost cutting.

it allows them to sell a camera with features slightly better than the XTi in some things (that a p&s user would want, like LV and SD) but also take some bits out of it that the first time slr buyer might not think of. like the proximity sensor. and the wireless remote sensor.

it also lets them stop making digic ii processors and nb-2lh batteries, which at this point are pretty much only used in the older rebel cameras.

i expect the XT and XTi to be off store shelves quickly. they're both already gone from canon's japan site.
