Who has it and please tell me your pros and cons about this camera.

Reason I'm asking is I have up to $1000.00 to spend on a digital camera. I had my sights on the Sony DSC-P10 but from what I've been reading; the camera sucks.

Thanks in advance.

Just a quick run down, main reasons for this camera will be:

Family events: i.e. birthday parties, weddings, etc

Graffiti photos: pieces of graffit in ditches and the like

Car shows: just regular car shows etc.

TIA

Again thanks for all the advice that was given. My girlfriend went behind my back and went and bought the Sony V1 camera from Circuitcity this afternoon lol.

I'm happy with what she decided, she's the boss so whatever she says, goes. And there is a fourteen day return period so I'm sure I'll get to try it out and see what's up with the cam. From all the reviews and comments I've read in other forums it seems to be a TINY step down from a 717 but just as good in some aspects.

Thanks again.

Taking pictures of your graffiti is about as smart as a pedophile keeping kiddie porn on his computer.:Q

Yep for a bit more you can get an SLR. You can add to the lenses as cash permits. A G5 is just a thousand dollar point and shoot. Makes little sense to me.

Who said it is my graffiti? I don't paint. And I can't get arrested for just taking pictures of graffiti anyway.

And that was a ridiculous thing to even bother posting that.

And this type of graff I'm talking about is not the stuff you see up on shambled buildings with just tags. I'm talking about pieces of work in ditches where it doesn't really affect anyone.

Well I'm actually at a $1,000.00 spending limit.

Eli has the name Elisha, by that I'm assuming she is a female?

HEH........

No, I'm 100% male.. Haven't you ever seen me talk about my girlfriend, or look in my sig? Unless you thought........ :Q ;)

It's pronounced E-lie-sha, not Alicia. :p

I think I've had about two people in my whole life pronounce my name correctly the first time.

WTF are you doing cmparing a P10 to a G5?

The G5 is too new to get a decent price on it. For the best bang for the buck, you ought to take advantage of lowered prices on the G4. If you don't mind the bulk, (or dreaded memory sticks
rolleye.gif
) the F717 is a MUCH better bang for the buck than the G5. It's a big jump in price to out do that camera.

Bottom Line
  • If you want a long lens zoom 5-megapixel camera, either model is very hard to beat. I don't know of another camera that can best it overall, dollar for value. - Peter iNova
Digital Photography DSC-F717 Review
  • "...Even a year on from my DSC-F707 review I find myself unable to name a new five megapixel prosumer digital camera which takes better pictures than the DSC-F717, and that is saying a lot."
Steve's Digicams F717 Review
  • "...I find it safe to say none will out-perform the F717. From the high resolution 5MP 2/3" imager and the ultra-sharp Zeiss lens to the robust and accurate image processing, this camera is sure to satisfy even the most demanding of users..."
Imaging Resource F717 Review
  • "...you've got an "enthusiast" camera that stacks up against anything on the market. Sony innovations like NightShot and NightFraming are just further icing on the cake. Despite its sophistication though, the F717 manages to remain a very user-friendly and approachable camera - There's no reason for a novice to pass it by in favor of a lesser model, as its full-auto mode is as easy to use to use as anything out there."

For around $1000 you can pick up a used D60 and a 50mm f/1.8 lens. An SLR would give you a lot of room to grow, and it sounds like you're at least kind of serious about it if you're willing to shell out $1000.

Check out the Canon Forum at DPrewiew.com. Some people over there have one already. I see frequent complaints about lack-lusted body design compared to other Canons.

Yeah I noticed that. I'm not that serious about cameras but I am serious about quality photos and a camera that will last me two to three years. I have no background in photography. I'm an entry level guy looking for a bad-ass camera non-SLR. That's it.

I think I'm more than likely going to go with the G5 as it is a nice camera. I'm gonna wait until Dell has a phat deal on it. Just two days or three days ago I could have gotten it for like $600 something shipped.

The G5 is a terribly buy right now. The G3 is the best possible deal/price for a Canon camera.

Well, if you want a point-and-shoot camera, the G-series is not your best bet. If you want something that is more P&S with some manual features, get an S30, S40, or S45. If you want something that has more manual features and is geared for people who know about aperture and shutter speed, etc., then the G2 or G3 would be your best bet. Spend the rest on accessories.

He says he can get it for close to $600, which is a lot better than the prices I've seen. I'd suggest the DSC-V1 for a smaller camera, but it's way too high priced right now.

This is reason why I wanted to get the Sony DSC-10 but i've noticed pictures and reviews that show crappy pictures.

If Eli were female then wouldn't I have said gal, female, woman, girl, chick, broad, dame, biyatch ??? instead of guy?

If I had $1k to spend I'd go for a cannon 10D myself.

But as you don't want anything too fancy I'd go with a Sony F717. Like Ornery I like it. Fast shoot to shoot time, quite a bit improved over the F707.

"...TINY step down from a 717..."

I've heard the same plus it's a lot more compact, which is a plus. Fourteen day return period, eh? You should be able to snag the 717 at Sears for the same price or less than CC sold the V1 for. I'd REALLY be torn on that. Having the swivel body is a big plus to me. I frequently shoot with the camera at waist level. People don't even know you're shooting unless you use the flash. There's also the overhead shots when in a crowd. I don't have to push to the front to get a shot, which is darn handy. Give it some serious thought. It's a big purchase. I imagine you thanked your GF 'profusely' ;)
