Canon G5 Announced

Canon has today (officially) announced the five megapixel PowerShot G5. While we are often happy to respect embargo's (to get what we are told is exclusive info) it's getting repeatedly more frustrating when you see so called embargo information published sometimes weeks ahead of the real announcement (it does make you wonder if such leaks aren't planned by the manufacturers). The PowerShot G5 is a camera I feel Canon should have announced at Photokina last year instead of the G3, it's a essentially a black bodied, five megapixel version of that camera. Five megapixel 1/1.8" sensor and a four times optical zoom lens, the competition will be Sony's DSC-V1 and the recently announced Nikon Coolpix 5400. List price ?899 in Europe, $899 in the US.

how does a camera like that compare to a Canon EOS 10D...i'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to digital (or any type for that matter) photography. i've been thinking of getting an SLR camera...while my s230 is nice for pics of friends and what not, i'd like something a bit more advanced

the Canon EOS 10D is a Digital SLR. Takes aftermarket Lenses.

the G5 is till gonna be a glorified Point and Shoot.

remember, you'll also need to buy lenses + a flash (if you need one)

My wife got me a Nikon Coolpix 4500 for fathers day. I guess it was sold out ina bunch of stores she went to. We know nothing about digital but some guys she works with say it's a great camera.

One question though. Where can I find a memory card for it. It only came with an 8mg one.

Looks like your camera uses compact flash cards. You can scout out the hot deals forum and see if you can score something cheap, otherwise a 128MB card will run you about $40 at Dell.

Coolpix 4500 is a 4MP, right ?
Grab a 512MB CF and that will be enough I think.
I think I saw a Viking one recently for around $85ish after MIR.
Don't worry, CF deal will always be around.
Get at least 256MB.

Yep it's a 4mp. Wife got a good deal on it from what it sounds like. I think she said it was 699 with a 200 mail in rebate, then also got 100 off because it was the demo. They also gave her a extended warrenty for free. It was the only one left in the store.

Not sure if that's a goood deal but it sounded like it.

I'll go look in the HD forum for a CF

you might just want to try an EOS film camera and see if you like carrying around an SLR for a while... rebel body is much cheaper than a 10D, and the tech progresses a bit slower than in digital cameras. the lenses are all interchangeable anyway.

if nikon manuals are anything like canon manuals i would say read it, then take it with you and follow its guidlines for shooting things while learning the manual and semi-manual controls of the camera.

LMAO that 8 MB card holds about 4 shots.

If you want no rebate hassles, the easiest deal right now is PNY 128 MB CompactFlash at BestBuy and BestBuy.com for $29.99. I would pick up a couple, as each card will hold approx. 50+ 4 Mpixel shots.

If you're willing to wait for the best deal, and fuss with rebates, then Dell.com will probably be your best bet.

We were actually thinking we could get about 20-25 pictures on it, we just plan on taking small pictures.

are all CF cards about the same are is there a particular make that is better then the rest? Dell has a Kodak 128mg for $37. Is Kodak good?

Keep your eyes on the hot deals forums for CF deals. I just got my girlfriend a Viking 256 CF card for $35 after rebate from Amazon.

CPU PowerUser magazine just had a big article reviewing CF cards. Go to Borders or B&N and check it out. Their results were very interesting. Many times, the cheaper CF cards outperformed the more expensive ones. They do say that this completely depends on what camera you have. They used a G3 and some really expensive digital SLR for their tests.

Just about everyone at DPreview's Canon Forum is upset over the G5: why did Canon skip a number? why no improvements upon the G3 other then one more megapixel? G3 + 1 megapixel + black body = G5. The good news is that the G5 will cause prices on the G2 and G3 to fall even more, making the G2, as one DPreview member put it, "the deal of the century."
