Canon G3 or S400?

Im thinking of buying one of either the Canon G3 or the Powershot S400. I was wondering if anyone knew of a comparo site that compares the two models. How much superior is the G3? And is the shutter speed (and shoot to capture time) really that much superior for the G3?

Thanks.

Check www.dpreview.com the reviews and the Canon forum. There's a pretty big difference between the G3 and S400 physically. You should read the reviews of each at dpreview and the other big digi cam sites.

you can't compare the two really, they are pretty damn far apart in terms of what market each is for. one is subcompact, and one is a prosumer camera... you really need to look at what you're going to be using hte camera for to identify what type of camera you want first, then start looking at the models in that category.

well, either way Id like to get a camera that can snap shot of things moving at high speed, and capture fast enough so I can take another shot fairly quickly. Now i know that there are multi-thousand dollar cameras that do this, but I have no need for a 6 MP camera, especially when I plan on having my pictures be resolved to 1280 res max.

But portability is a very convenient feature, and Im likely to snap more shots with it being small. Im leaning towards the S400, but Im afraid that ultra portable means none to quick, so taking pictures of a sprint are out of the question.

Though another thing that would be nice is manual focus, but thats too much to ask for.

The PowerShot A80 kind of falls in the middle of these two cameras. It's a bit smaller and much cheaper than the G3, and has a bunch more features (like the flip out LCD screen and lens attachment option) than the S400. You might want to consider looking into that model, as well.

The G3 is a whole lot more versatile than the S400. It has a flash adapter and interchangeable lenses are available, which right off will make this camera far more useable than the S400. Of course, if you just want an very portable camera that you won't feel inclined to spend any money upgrading, go with the S400.

if you are capturing moving objects then the f2.0 lense on the G3 is going to help... one stop faster than the lense on the s400/a80 allowing for faster shutter speeds.

Hrmm, anyone know of a good place to get the Canon G3 on the cheap? Seems like every place is riding on the holiday sale waves so there's not too many deals on :(.

I just got my S45 aobout a week ago.
I really like it so far.
Of course, it's my first digicam, so I don't have enough experience to really give you a comparison.

I got mine from Gateway.com for $330 after a $25 coupon.

like someone else pointed out, the g3 is only a single step faster. they both have faster max shutter speed given enough light.. go with s400 if u need portability

lol

You will have to pay more to get a decent shoot to shoot time my friend.

That is my only iffy point about my Minolta F100 and most cameras out there. The Sony F717 is fast but still about 1second lag between shoot to shoot time if not more. Can't remember the specs off the top of hand.

Yeah, I have an S45. It's a nice camera, but it's shutter speed isn't all that fast. Takes great pictures, though!

the g3 would blow away the s400 for taking great pictures, but the s400 can still take very good pictures and it fits in your pocket

Hrmm... I would say that there is also a lot that can be attributed to skill/creativity... Just because its a better camera doesn't quite equal greater pictures :).
