Canon G2 or G3?

Should I spend the extra $200 and buy the Canon G3 over the G2?

I know the G3 has 4x optical zoom over 3x of the G2.

are there any other features which might make it worth the extra cabbage?

I had the pleasure of playing with a G3 this past weekend. I would not get this camera, at least not with the current firmware that it is using. The camera can NOT focus on bright red objects, at all. Both myself and a rpofessional photographer tried this and any image with bright red in it is blurred whereas all other shots came out perfect. I have no clue what causes this, as the G2 completely does not have this issue. I've checked the dpreview.com forums and people there are having this issue too.

I'd go with the cheaper G2. The G3 is basically the G2 with some minor improvements, many of them cosmetic. There are all sorts of G2 vs. G3 debates over at the DPreview.com Canon Forum. Both sides have their arguments.

I just know that I am happy with my G2 and the G3 didn't change enough to warrant an upgrade for me. I probably won't upgrade until Canon offers a CMOS sensor instead of a CCD on their "prosumer" camera.

I am fairly new to the world of photography.. especially beyond simple point and shoot.

Will I be able to adjust F-stops (or whatever..) to take pictures where the background will actually be out of focus.. while the main subject is in focus?
I see the G2 can go to F/2.6

Well, that is yesterday's news - Canon's "prosumer" D30 and D60 have had CMOS sensors for about 2 years.

Corky, the D30 and D60 are regarded by most to be part of Canon's line of "professional" SLR cameras. The G2/G3 are "prosumer" cameras, fitted between the "pro" D30/D60 cameras and the "consumer" S- and A-series of cameras. So, my statement is still correct: Canon has yet to offer a CMOS sensor to their "prosumer" line.

Talk about nit-picking, though

Well - not according to camera reviewers. A true "prosumer" camera should have removable/changeable lenses. I see the G series as a high end consumer product - 🙂 Yeah - we're nit picking. 🙂 I moved to the D60 after losing many good wildlife shots - the CCD sensor cameras just don't react fast enough - they have a slight delay - just enough to lose the shot (ie., when a whale breaches.)

Go with the G2, the G3 is not worth the extra cash imho. My G2 takes wonderful pictures, and combined with my Canon S900 the quality is stunning. Head over to DP Review for in-depth help and great camera forums.

dpreview has a bandwidth cap, only a certain amount of hits at once. Max users happens quite often there.
