I have had consistent trouble getting my pictures lined up horizontally ever since I had surgery for a detached retina in my right eye. It is fairly constant - about a 2 degree tilt to the right - even though it looks square in the viewfinder.

Then I had occasion to use a Canon S3 IS, which can put in an electronic grid in the viewfinder. This really helped me. So, I decided to try the Ee-D focusing screen for my 5D. It was no expensive.

Installing it was not hugely difficult, but was full of intimidation. Got it done and the result is wonderful. I no longer have to micro rotate most pictures 2 degrees counterclockwise.

The 5D has 3 screens available. The 1D and 1Ds have about 5 or 6. That's as far down the food chain Canon allows for such changes.

40D now has interchangeable focusing screens.

do you know if any screens feature split prisms for manual focus? (there is the katz eye, but it loses the focus indicators)

You could start here. BTW - this has the much praised (above) split focusing rings.

I, too, got a Ee-D grid focusing screen. I didn't have problems setting lines straight when using crop body cameras but as the viewfinder of 5D is quite big(quite small when compared to MF film cameras), I started to have that problem.
I know Canon won't do it but it'd be just great if Canon changed AF points to be more like those of Pentax's: Pentax has viewfinder that looks like [ o ]. ( http://a.img-dpreview.com/revi...res/viewfinderview.gif )
Those [ ] lines are 1. thick enough to be viewable in dark(not like Ee-D) 2. helps to adjust both vertical and horizotal lines 3. shows where the golden angle is.

Anyway, I'm sure you have changed the screen type in cutom functions. If not, you might encounter slight exposure problems.

Absolutely! That was step three. I created a PDF file of the procedure drawings with the English instructions, and can send to anyone interested.
