Canon EOS-300D

Wait a little while.
With the regular discount on Dell, it will be a hot deal soon.
As of now, with tax it comes way too close to 10D price.

10D can be had for around $1300 from reputable online seller.
It's feature set is much better than 300D.
If you have $1000+ to spend, you better look closely at 10D.
300D at retail price is just passable.
But 300D kit around $800ish will definately worth it.

It is a good time to be a (wannabe) digital photography enthusiast. 🙂

Now if I could just get myself a digicam.........

The 10-D is a better camera than the 300D but I don't see how you'd get one with a decent lens for less than $1800+tax. Better, but not $800 better unless you really need the pro features and magnesium body. The CCD and image quality is exactly the same, and the lens bundled with the 300D is reportedly quite good.

If I had the money I'd certainly go for the 10-D, but the 300D is a tremendous deal - assuming, of course, that it's as good as the reviewers are claiming.

This camera started shipping already.. I got mine this weekend at Best Buy. To those who say the 10D is better - yeah sure but the 300D is affordable and the extra 10D features aren't worth it (to me). The difference is actually $600 since the camera is $900 (body) or $1000 (kit with lens and charger). The main differences are the firmware and the body. The actual pictures you get should be the same since you have the same CMOS chip.

With the 10D you have a better (magnesium alloy?) body whereas the 300D is plastic. Well I have a 300D in my hands and it feels great and doesn't look that cheap.. plus the plastic makes the body a lot lighter. Durability is not an issue, if you drop your camera you're screwed either way.

ISO 3200 - Most people would never use this mode in the first place because of the high level of noise.

Prism - The viewfinder prism on the 10D is slightly better so the viewfinder image on the 300D will be a little darker.

Buffer - The 10D can take more continuous shots (the 300D can take about 4 shots in 2 seconds and thereafter go at regular speed, the bottleneck being saving pictures to your memory card).

So yeah I accepted all those cons and definitely found the camera to be worth it. I get beautiful pictures and found that $600 isn't worth it for the better body, buffer, and firmware features.

By the way, check out the review on dpreview. Phil gave it a "highly recommended" which he saves only for the best cameras.

I already have a bunch of EF lenses. This could be a great option.

I was looking at the G5 for a point & shoot, but I think it would be more practical to keep my Canon S110 for that, since its a nice little camera. For the ~$100 more than the G5, this is deginitely worth it.
