Canon EF-S 10-22mm is that on a crop body or full frame?

I was wondering is the numbers

Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens

Are those 10 - 22 on a crop body or a full frame?

EF-S will only work of a APS-C sized sensor. So it is still 10-22 X the crop factor. Since canon has a 1.3 and a 1.6 crop camera I guess they do it that way. But I think the 1.3X camera are a different sized sensor and may not be for EF-S lenses.

I thought they always measure the focal length based on full frame, even if the lens is made only for crop body cameras (like the Tamron 17-50mm Di II lens is only for crop bodies).

focal length is based on the distance of the focal point to the image sensor. its the same measurement regardless of the size of the imager, whether APS, 1/2.5", 35mm, 6x6, or large format. a 70 mm lens is a 70 mm lens on 35mm, MF, and large format.

(note: on 35 mm SLR lenses focal lengths shorter than ~35mm actually have the focal point at a further distance than the indicated length, the light is them manipulated with retrofocal elements to create an image that approximates what an actual wide angle lens would look like.)


now that i've gotten the technical bits out of the way, 10-22 is the focal length of that lens. you'd then multiply by the crop factor of the cut down image sensor (1.6) to find the 35 mm equivalent.

and EF-S lenses can only mount on the canon digital rebel series, 20D, 30D, and 40D.

10-22mm is the focal length, which doesn't change regardless of the sensor size.

Mounted on an APS-C camera, the field of view of the 10-22 would be the same field of view as a 16-34mm on a 35mm format camera.

Yup. They made the 10-22 because on 1.6x crop cameras, 16-17mm turns out to be 25-27mm, which isn't really that wide.

Wiith the 10-22mm you can get nice wide landscape and architecture shots.
