I recently upgraded to a Canon 50D, with the 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM kit lens. I have a coworker that has been looking for one of those lenes, and offered to trade me his 17-40 f/4L for it plus some cash from me. It looks like a good lens, but I am not sure if it will be a worthwhile trade.

Will the lack of IS hurt me with a lens like this on my crop body. I got a L series zoom telephoto last week (70-200mm F/4L IS) and I now know that the L is where I want to be, but I am just wondering about this trade.

I do mostly outdoor photography, when I am hiking or out and about in the woods.

Thanks

Whoever wants to trade you knows nothing about lens values.

Well, he wants my lens, plus he wants me to give him a couple hundred dollars on the side, for his used L lens. He will still be getting some cash too.

a bit harsh there? not many people realize the prices of lenses jumped. even so, it's not a terrible deal for the coworker.

*edit* hrm, ok, maybe it is, I thought the 28-135 was valued a little more used

He knows how old this lens is though, I bought it with my 50D on July 3rd. He was going to just buy one of them off of B&H new, but we came up with the idea of the trade today instead.

We haven't fully figured out the deal, I am a friend of his. He will probably want more cash on the side, which isnt a problem. He did let me take the L lens to check it out and make sure it works fine.

I was mostly concerned with the lack of IS, but I am most likely going to do this trade, so I am hoping it wont be a problem.

28-135mm on crop body is somewhat ackward. 17-40mm makes more sense though it depends on what other lenses you have.
IS is always good to have but with 17-40mm, it's not a big deal.

Well, the other lenses I will have are my 70-200mm F/4L IS that I just bought, and I have a 50mm F/1.8 II as well.

Lack of IS won't be a big deal, it's needed more on the telephoto end. Not so much on the wide angle side. Go with the deal, you won't be disappointed.

Well, we went through with the trade, my kit lens + $250 for his used (but in brand new condition) 17-40 f/4L. I think I got a pretty good deal out of it.

He says he did not use this lens hardly at all (and it shows by the condition, it looks brand new), and he is going to use the kit lens and cash he got from me to put together a camera and body for his daughter for a Europe trip.

I dont' think he got too bad of a deal. I see new for ~450 and used for around ~250. Your lens + 250 brings it to about 500 bucks. About 100 bucks short, but not a complete rip for him like others are making it out to be since it is pretty much brand new.

Besides, amonst friends.

Given that, you'd be a fool to pass 17-40mm for 28-135mm.

Good deal for both of you.

He gets a more useful lens + some cash for his daughter's setup, without the hassle of going through craigslist/ebay. You get a sweet lens for a very reasonable trade/price.

Thats kind of what we were both thinking.

He did not give me a UV filter at that price though, so I ordered a Hoya S-HMC UV filter and an S-HMC circular polarizer for it today.

VERY sweet lens though.
