Aside from the lame naming scheme we get, and the fact it's still a rebel body (will hold final judgment until I see it in hand)... http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10020806canoneos550d.asp

It has the same video capabilities as the 7D it seems. Could this be a boon to video enthusiasts who jumped at the 7D? $800 body only. The sensor is not the same, it is "similar" and "adapted" so maybe it's will be a make or break there.

The lack of a 60D announcement has me bummed. I'd take this T2i in a 50D body. Or rather, a 50D, with digic 4, heh.

Looks like a very compelling entry level body. I was really hoping for a 60D as well even though my 50D way outclasses my abilities still. I still like to see what the future holds for the semi-pro crop line...or if its been truly replaced by the 7D.

Now even their $800 Rebel has native 1080p24. I feel bad for 5D2 owners who bought it on the premise of video production, with the firmware "fix" still pending over a year after release.

Wow, I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on the T1i a few months back. I'd be regretting that purchase. I'll be holding out for this one now!

There is a huge gap still between the $800 T2i and the $1700 7D. I have no doubt a 60D will get squeezed in there, hoping for $1200 MSRP. Though, I will take a 7D pushed into the $1300 and release a 9D crop that's even better =)

meh, I don't feel too bad. Video is not really the main goal of these things. If it was that important, the 5D would not be their primary, just a damn nice secondary or experiment.

Now they can experiment on the cheap with multiple T2i's for the cost of even 1 7D. Granted, I'm not sure how appealing it is as I don't do video, but I would gather there's some market that is drooling over the possibilities.

So what's all the 1080 full HD video recording Canon has been touting for the t1i for the past year? A fake HD? But wait... NOW we have TRUE HD!!!

* Exposure compensation +/-5 stops
* Select maximum value for Auto ISO

Yeah, way to go, finally catching up to what Nikon had for the past 5 years or so.

The T1i has a Digic4 processor, but can only do 1080p20.

The T2i has a Digic4 processor, but can do 1080p30/25/24.

Besides a few lines of code in the firmware, did they add anything to the latter hardware-wise that would enable the extra frame-rates?

The 60D name would cause a lot of confusion. Canon's first two DSLRs were the D30 and D60. A D60 and a 60D could roil the waters.

That's true. But - it could still cause confusion. After the D60 I bought a 20D. Sometimes I referred to it as a D20. Anyway - just a thought. The marketing geniuses will assign a numbet that they think will sell. :)

Umm...When did 5d mk2 came out and what sort of video functions did we have back then?
With your logic, one should never buy any electroic goods because something better and cheaper always comes out in later years.

Geez, you're a generally bright person but whenever you see the word Canon, you make yourself extremely stupid and you don't even seem to notice it within yourself. Nikon vs. Canon is not a religious issue. Brighten up.

Anyway,
Entry level dslr market is a weird place. Most, if not all, of users in this base wouldn't need that high MP. But, they're the ones who think more MP equals better camera.

I think this 'dslr' would do well simply because of its video recording abilities. It'd attract lots of video guys who's been drooling over 5d mk2 and 7d. CineFF 1080p 40mbps dslr for $800 is really attractive.

50D has Digic IV and no video...by you're logic they should just roll out new features to all old cameras therefore defeating the purpose for them releasing a new model.

It's common practice in any product to release a new model each year that only trumps the last with certain new features.

If the T2i has picture quality similar to the 7D then it will be a steal for $800. The 7D increased the usable ISO of the 50D/T1i by about 1 stop(to ISO 3200/6400 depending on how noise tolerant/what noise reduction you use).

bandwidth off the sensor itself, perhaps?

If you're doing indie films on a tight budget, there's no reason to buy a camcorder anymore - $799 with 1080p and interchangable lenses, sheesh!!
