and canon has a gap in their lineup that you could drive a tank through.

What gap is that?

1Ds - all out maximum image quality, weathersealed - professional travel or studio photographer
1D - excellent image quality and extremely fast shooting speed, weathersealed - sports/wildlife shooter
X0D - midrange SLR - shooting speed, operation, and build quality between 1D and XX0D
XX0D - entry level SLR

Seems a pretty well-rounded lineup to me.

Not to mention the extensive lineup of P&S cameras:

Gx: compact body with near full manual controls, hot shoe, RAW capability (in G9)
Sx IS: mega zoom with many manual controls
Axxx (IS): compact package, rotatable screen, fair amount of manual features
SDxxx: simple to use camera

Yeah, I'm really not sure what gap he's talking about. Canon also fills the gap between the X0D w/ the 5D.

I am really interested to see what Nikon releases on their high end. They are competing well in the sub-2000 bracket, but they only have the D2X to compete with Canon's high-end offerings.

not really. you go from a $1300 camera to a $2600 camera. i almost equate the 5D and the 1D (regardless of the price difference), as the 5D has a bigger sensor and can have better image quality. high speed camera or high image quality camera? there is no D200 level camera (well, the 40D is, but it won't be a competitor when the D300 comes out). it's another symptom of canon not really having interest in APS.

And why won't the 40D be a competitor when the D300 comes out?
The 30D still held it's own after the D200 came out.
Just like cars, paper racing sucks.

-edit--wait, woah....what. Canon having no interests in APS??????????????????????????????????????

canon doesn't really. they're going to push 35 mm down as fast as they can get it there. in a few years time i doubt that any but the sub $1000 cameras will be APS (granted, that is the largest part of the market).

the D80 and the 30D are the real competitors (roughly the same price, and they each traded with each other in features). i'd expect the 40D to compete more with the D80's successor (D80s? nikon is running out of numbers) than with a D300.

the mid-range cameras from both manufacturers are competitive with each other simply because there really isn't all that much an SLR maker can do to differentiate product for a set amount of money.

the D300 certainly will have features to at least somewhat justify the increase in price over a D80s and 40D. in addition to almost certainly using sony's new sensor (so higher MP), it'll also have a faster burst (if not longer) and perhaps full weather sealing.

which almost certainly tells me that a D3 is going to use a 35mm sensor.

uh, that is a contradiction to your previous statement.
I predict there will be two EF-S body offerings in the future. A lowly Rebel with simpler AF points, a higher end rebel near the 1000 dollar mark. And the 5D and the 40D offerings at those price points will merge, so the prosumer camera will be FF in about 24 months. But might have a crop mode for reach (faux pas reach of course)
And btw, imo, my 30D I compare to the D200. Metal bodies, same fps.
APS-C and FF are too profitable in their own ways to ditch. And I don't see how Canon is showing any signs of not being committed to APS-C. I mean the APS-C lenses are selling like hotcakes.

How does Canon has a gap like that you mentioned?
If so, what kind of gap companies like Sony, Pentax, Olympus have?
On top of Canon's line-ups, Canon is currently the only company that offers 2 FF cameras.

You can't make direct comparisons between those two brands claiming that one's missing what the others have. Nikon and Canon has different line-ups when it comes to crop sensor cameras (Nikon offers NONE when it comes to FF cameras. How about flagship cameras?)
If you make direct comparisons, you'll always notice that one's lacking what the other offers.

Bad, biased chart alert.

Exactly. Like this comment:

"I can't believe that they're satisfied with only one true consumer DSLR"

He doesn't even mention the Rebel XT on the chart...or older versions of cameras that now fall into the lower consumer market. The 10D/20D is less expensive these days. Used sure but still.

Meh.

I mean the 30D isn't even all that much more than an XTi.

Understood, it was merely a starting point to compare the bodies across. I dont know enough about Canon bodies to even start an opinion on which bodies compare to the others.

Personally, i couldn't tell you 5D, 30D, and XTi compare to and i only know the Mark is the top dog in the canon world.

For someone like me, it gave me a rough estimate on which bodies MIGHT go head to head with.

Would someone chime in with something better? i dont need a full on featurelist, just model numbers and i can look them up and such.

I can probably reply later tonight with a chart of my own. I'll try and make it unbiased as possible
