my camera's lens is stuck out and will not close and go back inside the camera. when i power it on the canon logo comes up, then it beeps and gives me a black screen. in the bottom corner of the screen it comes up "E18" Anyone have any idea what this means or how I can fix it? camera and playback modes both do not work.

Also found this tidbit on a forum:

From what I've read, and seen with my own camera when the salesperson put the wrong tube adapter on the camera, is that the E18 error occurs when the lens mechanism gets dirty and the camera sees a resistance in the motor, it will give that error. Somewhere I saw a how-to on disassembling the camera and cleaning out the drive. Not much else was found when I search for E18, but when the guy at Epperson put the wrong tube adapter and turned on my camera to find the lens hit the back of the macro lens and get jammed, it returned an E18 error. So it sounds like the dirty housing or when the mechanism has a lot of resistance is the culprit.

Hey, do either of your A75s make an "erk erk" noise after the lens comes out? Mine started doing it after I got it, but it hasn't affected operation at all. Dunno if it's normal or not.

Yeah, I was going to do an RMA, but it hasn't affected performance (to my knowledge), pictures look great! Oh and hey, check this beast out:

Yeah, I got this error on my powershot A320. Luckily I had a warranty on mine and shipped it to Canon for repair.
Hope you have a warranty

Thanks for the site Kaido, but none of that stuff worked on mine. I bought the camera a year and one month ago so the warranty is no good (1 year). I figured there was no hope left so today I took the camera (box, manuals, everything) to Walmart to see if there was any chance they could do anything about it. They looked at it, said everything was there and told me to pick out what I wanted to exchange it for  The selection was pretty limited and I didn't want to pay a whole lot more over what they were giving me back for the camera ($150), so I ended up going with a Canon Powershot A520 ($180), paid the $30, and was on my way :)
