Canon A70 Questions...

Well, I'm 21 now so my dad pretty much just says, Jason, you've got $500 for Christmas, give me a list tomorrow. I know that kinda takes the fun out of Christmas, but every year he'll tell me the thing I want is out of stock and he can't get it until Feb. Every year I get on Xmas.

Anyone, back to the Canon A70. It is what I asked for. I showed him a kit on ebay that looked good to me.

I've had a Minolta Dimage 2330 for at least 4 years now (2.3 MP, optical zoom, etc) and it takes nice outdoors shots but sucks for everything else. I've got a 16MB card for the Minolta and I can take a lot of pictures on it, even @ the highest quality.

If I were to get this A70 with 256mb card, how many high quality pictures will it hold? I think I read I can capture video with the A70 as well. How much video would 256MB hold? Thanks guys!

ah $500!? don't get the A70! get an A80 at least, they are newer and a lot better, plus I wouldn't get a kit. that stuff is very easy to buy separately (newegg for high perf AA batteries/hot deals for CF card)

Around 300 at the highest quality. At the highest quality, picture size is roughly 1 MB.

I don't know about video, but there is a 3 minute limit, and the 256 MB card will hold plenty of that.

Baboon, I want other things for Xmas as well =) It was between the A70 and the A300 so be glad I chose the A70! The A300 is even on a hot deal too, $75 cheaper than the A70, but optical zoom and other stuff is apparently better on the A70 than A300.

if i were you .. i'd sit on your current camera and wait another christmas for Canon to refresh their line of cameras.

I love my A70 and that kit seems reasonable if you want ALL of the stuff that comes with it. I would rather pick my camera case, etc. You could probably get an overall better deal with a buy.com coupon or similar. And the 256 MB card should be plenty. All I have is a 128 MB card and I have never filled it up. For video, count on about 1 MB for every 5 seconds.

I got my A70 from Officemax $50 off $300 coupon, $265 delivered

I got my batteries (8AA's, 2 sets good for over 250 pics each) + Maha 401FS charger the K1-MHC401FS8220DC partnumber from Thomas-Distributing...61.97 to my door.

I got the BF Circuit City 128MB CF x 2 for $19.99 each after rebate + I had another 128MB CF already.

I'd get a lowepro bag or equivalent with room for the charger and a few extra CF's and batteries.

The A60/A70 are perhaps two of the best values as well as quality cameras you can get right now.

The A80 is better and worse depending on what spec you are looking at than the A70....it really depends what you want to do....regardless at the A80's price other Canon's make more sense, Elph or G series depending on the size and purpose you want.

PM me or reply here if you want more details

My A70, at highest quality (2048 x 1536) and detail (superfine) settings, says I can shoot about 150 pictures with a 256MB card.

At 320x240 resolution, it'll shoot about 2 or 3 minutes of video at a time (sorry, I forget).

At 640x480 resolution, it'll shoot 30 seconds of video at a time. The memory card is NOT the limiting factor, it's set in the camera itself.

I  my A70!

I get about 175 high quality images on the 256MB card with my A70. I use AA rechargeables. I bought an Energizer charger with 4 NiMH batteries (1850 mAH) for $20 and 4 more Sony AA's (2100 mAH) for $10. Camera seems to run forever on a set.
I would buy the part separately. The camera, Canon case, Crucial 256MB card, 8 batteries and charger all set me back less than $400.

That's debatable - but you have to factor in if he needs all those shooting modes that come with it. Plus is doesn't have sound for recording movies, not to mention xD :frown:
I think the 3100 is an awesome camera for the money, but IMO you can't lose with the A70

There is alot of people recommending the Coolpix 3100 over the A70 due to 'sharper' looking pictures at the review sites. The Coolpix 3100 offers a ton LESS features though and also less shooting time and also many have problems finding CF cards that work properly. Also the Coolpix may produce sharper, but the colors are not as good as the Canon, if you are planning on printing your pics..this is what will make a Canon pic way better than the more monitor-friendly Coolpix.

If you see any recommendation from a guy named Steve (srhaymesSlaysSpam@attbi.com) on google/usenet groups ignore him pretty much, he claims he got a several bad A40's and Canon could never get them right....he is a pro-coolpix advocate. He always harps on the 3100 as a godsend. I think almost any Canon posting on USENET has at least two or three of his posts in it 🙂 Lately trolls have been really amuck in rec.camera.digital (I think that is the main subgroup).

I do know so far in my own testing I can get a 'soft' pic if I move even slightly at the slower shutter speeds (which *should* happen) and if I select high speed shutters all my pics have been coming out sharp.
